Notes on 6/3/76 from @bourgwick

All his 1976 notes here: https://jessejarnow.com/2018/08/deadfreaksunite-1976/

I'm interested in making a best of June 1976 mix. All input welcome!

@4CPcomics and I do think Crazy Fingers is the headline of the year. It's a sublime, unique A+++ Garcia/Hunter masterpiece that immediately disappeared until '82 after a handful of mostly superb performances, each featuring that remarkable outro jam, and when it returned it was never at that level. It's fair to say IMO that every '76 CF is better than any post '76 version by far, though I love a few of the latter era versions despite their relative clunkiness.

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics I think this June tour and the April 1978 tour (both notably in theaters) are the best mixes and recordings for that Donna-forward idea, which I love; and '76 Dead has a smoothness to it, and Garcia's voice is better, so it's a lovely thought.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@caravan @4CPcomics ah yeah. Good call. And comes a time was played a lot in 76 including that lovely version out of crazy fingers

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@caravan @4CPcomics certainly.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics the Orpheum one from July is probably my favorite despite the crappy tape, but you can't go wrong. Even at that sluggish 6.3 opening show it's fully formed and lovely.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics not counting her own songs: Candyman, Looks Like Rain, It Must've Been the Roses, High Time, Music Never Stopped. In '76 particularly, Crazy Fingers and Scarlet. Cassidy esp in '76. Those are the ones that just jump to mind.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@noah_s @4CPcomics she probably sounds good on almost any version from June or July that you pick, but I am pretty convinced that the last two runs of the June tour (4 each at the Tower and Auditorium Theaters) are a clear step above the rest of the tour, perhaps excepting 6.9 Boston. It makes sense - they'd gotten enough reps with the lineup and material to play fluidly again, both relaxed and energetic. There are good moments earlier in the tour but that end chunk just elevates to my ear

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics I almost listed that one but was trying to keep it to a reasonable number. It's great. Most of the slower Garcia tunes have a Donna harmony part and they're usually great.

I just straight up walked out of a medical appointment. Stopped speaking when it was clear I was not being respected and that I was not being allowed to correct inaccurate information. Got up and walked out with her yelling through the building after me.

Like that was a miserable experience but on the other hand the power I felt???? Untouchable. Did you know you can just leave?? Happy Pride Month my friends!!!

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@grimalkina hell yes. You deserve better. And no one will ever get better unless you draw clear lines to show them their transgressions. How could they? Maybe this won't reach them, but you never know. And in the meantime you've protected yourself and set a good example.

Happy Tuesday, Masto! I’ve got a fun story to share.

So this morning I’m drinking coffee around 630am, and I see someone go running across our front yard. Weird. Then, my wife wakes up bc she hears people talking outside one of our bedroom windows.

I hear police sirens outside. Then, our alarm system alerts me to people in the backyard. Shit is getting concerning. (1/5)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@chopaganda @Rosey yeah sounds like both of you did the right things in your different circumstances. If we have to have cops, stopping armed robbers is what they're for, not chasing some poor mentally ill person.

Put on this old Phil run Tshirt and had to pause when I realized these shows were a quarter century ago. Man, it all goes way too damn fast.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@wobs @Kealoha321 yeah a gorgeous print, one of Everett's finest I know of (though I lost track of his work when he went hard into SCI world)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Kealoha321 dope tee though. I have that batik style print on another shirt, and this gem is my wife's (pardon the glare)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Kealoha321 @wobs yep those were fun, we saw the Kimock lineup 4 times in 99 and then that Herring/Haynes lineup that was later called the PLQ at those Roseland shows, at least one other Roseland run and down at the Cuthbert in Eugene once or maybe twice. Since that era we have pretty much faded off seeing post Dead lineups tho we will go see Phil every few times through

okay here's my midweek hot-take-free finals content for ya

  1. there's every reason to think this should be a good close series. No outcome would shock me except a sweep either way.

  2. Specifically, both teams have the players to guard the other team's best guys at least reasonably well (with the "no one stops Luka" caveat).

  3. there's a clear expectation among analysts and hoops heads that the BOS strategy will be to focus on stopping Kyrie above all. So watch for that in game 1

🏀 🧵

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@jdm2 huge agree on that first point assuming the Cs scheme up to stop Kyrie like they prob will (and should). So far this post season those guys have come thru when needed more often than not. That could easily be what the series pivots on

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar
  1. assuming (and hoping) we do get the close endings it feels like we should, and both teams play good defense, it seems like at least some of these games should come down to difficult endgame shotmaking. And based on how they've been playing I know which two guys I like in that scenario: Kyrie and Luka.

  2. Flipside, this postseason has seen a bunch of guys go up a level in terms of accomplishment. Maybe this is the year Tatum, Brown & Co show us they can seal the deal in the Finals.

🏀🧵

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar
  1. assuming they do so, the next question is adjustments. Do the Mavs make changes to their only real play (the super-effective drag screen) to counter the White/Jrue doubles? Or do they let it happen and count on the secondary guys to score a lot and Luka to close games?

  2. On the other side, now we know Zinger is back. BOS a 100% different and really unique offensive team with him. How do the Mavs try to match up across that frontcourt? That's another huge game 1 question.

🏀 🧵

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar
  1. overall I feel like the Mavs are coming in super hot and I don't see them losing their edge due to the long layoff. For that vibes-oriented reason only, they're my pick in the series: it just feels like it'll be close and I don't think Tatum/Brown can outduel Luka/Kyrie in that scenario. There's a version of this where the Celtics play team ball 7 deep and win convincingly behind best case scenario defense...but I'm feeling the other thing. Should be awesome! Thoughts?

There was a period in the first half of the 90s where straightahead/post-bop structures were married (successfully) to very vascular, propulsive rhythm sections, and this is no exception, from 1991:

Herbie Hancock: piano/keys
Wayne Shorter: saxophones
Stanley Clarke: bass
Omar Hakim: drums

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@zeruch this was the period I was just getting into live jazz and lineups of this type were catnip for my ears - Crazy People Music era Branford Marsalis Quartet being my specific entry point. It felt very fresh but was clearly directly in the classic jazz lineage I was just learning to appreciate. This lineup holds up wonderfully well, but how could it not with that group of killers?

In my live collecting hobby there are two kinds of grails to chase: those that might exist but probably don't, and those I know exist but haven't circulated digitally in any of the many online communities I'm part of. It's immensely satisfying when one appears, and that's the case with this specific, superb but short live Meters set from 1975. I had this on cassette circa 1988-91, lost it to a light fingered party guest & have been searching since. 1/2

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

This is the OG Meters at their very best: one of the best live bands in history before the dragon bit them. Solid recording, not perfect but clear and strong, and the performance level is absolutely straight fire. The few other shows from this era are either softer performances or worse recordings so even though it's short this immediately returns to its place as best in class. I knew it had to pop up eventually! Thanks to everyone involved including @bourgwick for setting up the tapes bot
