26/8/23: After testing pretty intensively over recent days & nights, i've decided now to give it a go as my new daily home. There's been many accounts, & a couple of ones, since i decided to venture into the Fediverse last November, but none of them quite captured the full Goldilocks essence of what i desire in a Fedi client. Will this one be it? 🤷‍♀️

13/9/23: I've broadly enjoyed my UX with Friendica, & admire many of its nice UI features & functions. However, i realised today that many of my posts from my venera.social Instance seem not to show up in my old Mastodon Instance. Whilst i completely recognise that Masto is NOT the Fediverse per se, it's become an important part of it, & i regard it as non-negotiable for my Friendica posts to federate more widely. Hence, from now, til further notice, my primary Fedi home reverts to @MsDropbear .

But you'd never know it from our witless 'economic debate'.The impacts on female employment of the government’s revamped stage three tax cuts continue to attract less debate than notionally more glamorous subjects such as the push for more “tax reform”. That’s of a piece with how the ongoing and significant feminisation of the workforce is routinely overlooked by the media and politicians.

What passes for the “productivity debate” barely addresses that the very concept of productivity in education, health and caring is at odds with traditional labour productivity measures. And industry policy is relentlessly focused on manufacturing and trying to re-establish a long-gone past when Australia made trains, or a future in which we make nuclear submarines, and pump out lithium batteries because we want to be a “renewable energy superpower”.

Caring and education services rarely feature in these utopian economic dreams. They crop up more in debate as problems to be solved, not exciting new (old) frontiers for investment — the NDIS is blowing out, there’s not enough access to health services, our educational standards are falling because of poor curriculums/lefty teachers/the woke agenda/not enough employer involvement, public sector pay rises are a disaster for the budget — and so on.

@helpers One of the distinct disadvantages, afaict, with the web UI [ie, using a browser] compared to Mastodon, is the inability to see / access / use the Compose Post box unless one is scrolled to the top of the timeline. In Masto, with both its default & UI views, the Compose box is always visible, hence available, regardless of any other timeline status. Tbh i find this restriction really frustrating in F.

For various reasons in F i prefer the Vier UI display option over Frio, but afaict my objection pertains to both.

Is there possibly some option buried in Settings that i might have missed, which when enabled makes the Compose Post box available any time, eg, from a top bar link as a popup modal?

Is there some AddOn for this that Friendica server owners could install that remedies this problem?

In absence of anything better, my inefficient workaround is to open a second tab of my F account, in which i then access the box to compose & send my impromptu post, without disturbing my position in my scrolled timeline in the original tab [eg, first thing each morning i scroll down & review all new posts since yesterday, but often think of something i want to say or ask that's not tied to any individual post i might be contemporaneously reading atm, six hours down my timeline].

Yes i remember it, ta, but what i don't remember atm [& it's not convenient for me atm to change back to Frio from Vier to see for myself, coz doing so would again bugger my timeline position] doesn't that button scroll off the top of the page as one scrolls down the timeline?

Presumably i'm wrong about that as logically you'd not otherwise have mentioned it. Unfortunately for me, IMO the Frio UI is utterly chaotic & cognitively stressful to use, compared to Vier, so i feel my choice of options is severely constrained here.

Is a change to the Vier source code even a remote possibility, to provide a comparable always-available Compose box or modal?

Question to any users who are also familiar with federating to servers.

Why don't Friendica Likes of posts federate across to Mastodon?

  • is there any known solution for this annoyance, or at least a workaround?
  • does the problem lie within Friendica, within Mastodon, or somewhere else?
  • doesn't this IMO sizable flaw rather mock the mantra that the Fediverse via facilitates widespread interoperability amongst myriad clients?

When i recently discovered that none of my Masto friends was seeing any of my Friendica Likes to their toots, i felt a bit devastated, not least coz it might have connotated rudeness on my part in their minds.

@gidi This blows my mind! 😮🤯 In neither of my Masto accounts can i see any of the Likes / Favourites; the icons remain in their default inactive state, regardless of waiting much time to allow for slow federating, & doing multiple page reloads.

There is only one bit of good news. My original post was wrong in that both my Mastos did after all receive the Notifications of the Likes [albeit many minutes elapsed before it occurred]. It's just that looking at the actual posts themselves [in Masto, i mean] gives no visual indication here that any Likes occurred.

I simply cannot understand how i cannot see them, yet you can. 😮🤯

@shiri @gidi Thank you! That's useful info for me to learn, & i suppose presumably underpins my confusion & duress on this matter.

When i joined the Fediverse in late 2022 it was with a Masto instance, & since then i've tried many different Mastos, as well as some Firefish & now Friendica. The thing though is that the majority of the peeps with whom i frequently chat are still on Masto, & so i feel it's pretty important that i can be confident that they get to see each & every Like / Favourite that i give to their various toots [like what certainly happens when i use Masto in lieu of Friendica]. Until last week i simply presumed this was ofc happening, til i accidentally discovered with some of my own Masto toots, that i later Liked in Friendica [for some tests i was doing] that those Likes never showed up in Masto. That made me feel pretty upset coz logically it implies that the same problem probably was also happening for my Masto friends.

Since then, given my lack of confidence, i've adopted a "belt & braces" approach of Liking their posts in my Friendica account [just in case it might somehow work properly] but then also manually replying to them simply with a thumbs-up emoji enclosed... but this "double-handling" is tbh really inefficient, ergo annoying. Hence, today, i thought i'd ask the question.

Now, i remain confused; clearly it works ok for some of you, but not all, which means, sadly, i think i need to keep going with my "double-handling", unfortunately.

However i just wish to clarify an important point. In my Friendica account i DO see when others Like my posts in their own Friendica instances, AND i also DO see when my Masto friends Like/Favourite one of my Friendica posts. In other words, it's not me i'm worried about.

Instead, i worry about the reverse scenario; that my Masto friends might not be seeing my Friendica Likes of their toots [& as i have already documented in this thread, my own tests last week & again this week confirm that problem]... however i am now confused by the fact that @gidi can see what i can't.

I absolutely adored the 4' B&W vox pop clip in Kings Cross; just hilarious & captivating. Listening to the voices & delivery therein was only part of the fun though; i was staggered by the massive invasion of personal body space by interviewer & interviewees compared to my own sensibility, plus i suspect that many of the interviewees were around my age now [60s] yet looked 20 years older [which is a major social trend i've observed over my lifetime; what "old" peeps look like has been getting older & older IMO].

I've a feeling this question will embarrass me for my shameful lack of proper grasp of some fediverse basics, but here goes...

  • i have three accounts, ie, this & two others. I also have a couple of Mastodon accounts.
  • one of my Friendica accounts [not this one] has been giving me major grief with random server unavailability [its current outage began ~23 hours ago]
  • during the comparatively short life of that account, i've not made anywhere near as many posts as my other accounts, nevertheless i have made a non-trivial number, including participating in various conversations
  • if i were to delete that account [next time that i can access it, ofc] would all those posts & convos still exist in the fediverse, via the federating effect that would/should have occurred, or do they all then just vaporise without trace anywhere?
  • i surmise it's the former, but in case it's the latter i hope for wiser heads to pls advise me before i do the deed.

I use a desktop browser [, an excellent fork] & in the absence of a more elegant option, have been copying target posts to clipboard, then pasting into my Floorp of about:translations. This though is clunky & "high friction" such that i often lazily instead opt to skip right over non-English posts in my timeline.

Given there's apparently nothing server-side to help here, prolly i shall reinstall the FF addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firef… which i uninstalled comparatively long ago once FF's native local translation tool came along. The AO has one advantage over the native tool though, it includes a context-menu option to translate selected text. I didn't need that any more back in Masto, but it seems now here in , i need it again.

Titled posts seem to be suffering from this behavior. This is the title that appears.You do not need to add a title to a post - it's optional. If you want to add an actual CW to a post in Friendica, just type at the beginning of each post that you want to add it (in the body of it, not in the title). Or you can click the eye icon, and it's added automatically. You can also do this with comments, like below:

I never had the chance before tonight to try your advice, but i now have [see attached picture]. The good news is that yes, thank you, in my Masto instance my test-toots now correctly appear with the CW spoiler, which works in the proper Masto style. The bad news is that back here in Friendica, something is wrong, because i cannot see any CW header text at all, only the body-text that should be hidden behind the spoiler. From the picture [in Edit mode, after i'd already Sent it & discovered the Masto-success but Friendica-failure] are you able possibly to discern what i might still be doing wrong please?

PS; in this current toot to you, i have deliberately NOT tried to use any CW.

is both disappointing yet gratifying, in that at least now i see i was not, afaik, "doing it wrong" 😉 . I have thought more about this, & done more experiments, & i hope that i might now have deduced a reasonable workaround. Whilst it's important to me that i can send posts from Friendica whose CWs will work correctly for any Mastodon peeps who might see & interact with them, i certainly also wish that the posts "make sense" still even when viewed by peeps [including me] here in Friendica... to that extent, i regard the current situation of not being able to see my CW header text in Friendica, as unacceptable, notwithstanding that it seems ok now in Masto.

My envisaged / attempted workaround is actually very simple. It merely involves a little duplication. After writing the abstract text [destined to appear in Masto as the CW header], then copy & paste that text [without any of the prefix & suffix control-characters] into the body of the post [& for a flourish, maybe make it H1 style so as to denote its role as a de-facto Header / Subject Title]. Thereafter i'll add the normal body text.

If this works, & i'm using this reply as the PoC, Masto users will see a proper CW, with its text-line repeated inside the expanded body, whilst Friendica readers will simply see the H1 text followed by the body.
