@liaizon look like they would work nicely for 3P3S configuration maybe? Best to spot-weld instead of soldering though; batteries are like hewat sinks and lithium based batteries uhh...don't do well with heat.

So I came to the office this morning as is customary for me on Thursdays and the moment I opened the front door I was subjected to an intense Olfactory Assault of Floral Proportions.

Someone (presumably cleaning staff?) decided it would be a good idea to plug in not one but TWO of those little electric air "fresheners" in our modest office space.

One of them just outside my office.

They had to be deactivated before the toxic vapours pickled my brain. I wonder if Tylenol works on this kind of headache. Ugh.

@Durff hmm I did not know that particular variety of scent bomb existed...sounds at least tolerable.

Not really needed in this case. Coworker is a Coffee Connoisseur and the smell of gourmet coffee brewing is the usual indicator that he has arrived to start his work day.

It's a shame my senses are still jammed so I am flying smell-blind this morning.

    @thegibson @Miredly I'm curious...is there any concept at all of "community moderation" because what I've seen so far second-hand is that it relies heavily or even exclusively on people to self-moderate with the assistance of algorithmic analysis which sounds just....something I dunno

    @thegibson Sounds disappointing but not surprising. Lots of cycles spent by this social media project with priorities completely upside down IMO. Seems like high on the list was

    • mobile identity
    • reputation/clout/verification of authorship
    • infrastructure to enable monetization

    which are fine and even important to look at in the grand scheme but none of these do anything at all to foster healthy communities and social interactions...they are "the mechanics" of a system, not functions central to social interaction and networking. No DMs? What is there to help foster communities/groups/SIGs etc? How is this meaningfully any better than Twitter from a human perspective? Like, yay decentralization but to people at large even care about that above all else?

    The approach to this just seems so....sterile and generic. I haven't seen anything that really fosters truly human interaction yet, but maybe I haven't seen enough I dunno. I don't quite get it yet.

    Huh. OK well there is human input into the machine at least. Hopefully there is some transparency into how such reports/tags are actioned upon. I fear if this is input into something heavily algorithmic that such crowd-tagging based moderation could be gamed for nefarious purposes. We'll have to wait and see more I guess.

    @objectinspace from an architectural design standpoint this sounds pretty powerful and flexible but it causes as many questions as it does answers for me

    Like, it seems that Bluesky is aiming for "the server you are on doesn't matter" philosophy with its approach to portable/nomadic identites and this composable moderation. Except now you just have "the moderation provider matters" instead, and maybe servers still matter too if admins are still indirectly involved through the choice of moderation platforms used to apply filtering at least by default?

    And what will default filtering end up looking like? Will users have to flick all those switches during onboarding? Do people have to now not only select the server they are on AND the moderation providers they use? Nothing is said about the UX around all this and that is crucial to success!

    Finally, it is all labeling and filtering. How are blocking, appeals/disputes etc. handled?

    @objectinspace apparently tagging and filtering are the only moderation actions that are available currently. It sounds like server admins and individuals alike can filter/mute based on tags but I am not aware of any specific "report to mods" mechanism apart from tagging posts and the tags go to the...moderating service or something I dunno.

    There is no mechanism to block abusers, and no discussion has been had about how abusers could be removed from a server by its admins. So, you can filter/mute but no way to stop an abuser from accessing your content yet. Apparently they are working on this so something will show up "real soon now" because it is supposedly a showstopper for moving past invite-only beta but not specifics given yet.

    There seems to be no dispute resolution mechanism at all at this point either so better choose your algorithms wisely because the potential for abusers to game them is real and there is no recourse!

    What is mind blowing is that he wasn't cancelled for what outrageous hateful disinformation he said on air...he was let go for what was leaked that he said off air contradicting the Fox News Narrative. Stuff like:

    • not being able to stand the insufferable blowhard Trump

    • trying to convince said blowhard to take COVID-19 more seriously

    • expressing highly critical opinions on the reporting of the whole election fraud lie, saying it hurt Fox's credibility

    • expressing disgust at Trump's tacit support of 1/6 rioters

    So...he got in trouble for getting caught expressing excessively reasonable judgement :blobcheeky:

    Out of the blue, "Tignish hush puppies" entered my head. Had not thought of that footware in decades.

    Now, you need to know that Tignish is a small town on PEI. Of course, there is a fair amount of fishing that goes on in PEI and so some wag named the boots exemplified in this photo, "Tignish hush puppies".

    Turns out hush puppies are also a type of fried bits of fish. Who knew. 🤪

    @puzzled A certain retired hockey player decided hush puppies should be called Timbits™️ in Canada, but folk legend has it that during fish frys the extra lumps of batter and whatever little chunks floating in the fryer used to be thrown to the dogs so they wouldn't bark and beg when the humans were enjoying their dinner, saying "hush, puppies!" as they did so.

    I dunno probably made up but I fund it delightful so I choose to believe it is Gospel truth.
