Considering your martial arts background he was probably the one in the most danger but seriously glad you (and the other guy) did not engage and remain unscathed.

A guy I used to box with at the gym sometimes who also taught self defense said the most important self defense skills are psychological: maintaining composure and de-escalation (this doesn't mean capitulation of course). "Mind games" can be surprisingly effective in minimizing physical conflict, and my boxing friend liked to use them to great effect during sparring too 😂 .

On today's episode of ✨️ Gina's Unnecessary Projects ✨️ We're building a kitchen island from wood scraps! Yaaay.

I need to get rid of these old boards and tiles in my shed, and my friend needs a kitchen island. Win win, right? 🔥

Current status: after some advanced maths I realized I don't have enough wood, so now the challenge is to find beams for the legs that look sort of similar to the rest of the wood. Aka "such a fun and cheap project wait how did this still cost me €100?" 💸💸💸

@ottaross @Gina CCA doesn't off'-gas but can leach into water and release arsenic fumes when burned, and use a mask when cutting it and don't cut it indoors if at all possible!

That said as long as it is not used where there is prolonged direct contact with food it should be fine (so as the frame and legs of a table there isn't an issue but don't make cutting boards or garden containers out of CCA treated wood).

@ottaross @Gina the primary motivation for restrictions on CCA treated lumber are due to the occupational hazards it presents during construction, demolition and disposal rather than its mere presence. Millions of children played on playground equipment made with the stuff after all lol.

But yeah if it is painted/sealed it is even less of a concern and when it is just the legs of the table like this...meh no big deal.

Can (and should) I provide a door code for our front door for deliveries to our house when we’re not home? I’m sick of deliveries being put smack in the middle of the front step on a perfect pedestal for porch pirates…

I can set up a specific code for each delivery company and make it only work during certain hours/days when a delivery is expected, so the security implications aren’t too bad imho. My bigger question is: will delivery companies even bother with it?

@cassidy It depends on who the shipper is in my experience

I think UPS and FedEx deliveries mostly follow delivery instructions, DHL a bit less so (coin toss) and Amazon...well if they bother even walking up to your door at all instead of just throwing your package at the house consider it a win

So this year marks the 25th anniversary of my first email server going online, and I have been running it continuously ever since (seriously I still have "Happy new year the world didn't implode" emails from 2000 in my email folders)

Nonetheless I still get this mildly dreadful feeling I have been doing it wrong this whole time. As such I have decided to go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwlucas/run-your-own-mail-server and make a modest pledge in exchange for Sage Advice and instruction from @mwl on running your own email server in the form of a DRM free e-book.

I have always been bemused by the irrational fear many Very Smart People have regarding self hosted email. By no means is it easy to set up but maintaining it isn't THAT hard. I have also hosted a Mastodon/Hometown instance for 7 years and I out more work into that, and that same crowd hasn't developed a phobia towards elephants. The propaganda against self hosted email is very strong!

I encourage all efforts to wrest control of email back from Google and Microsoft!
