@derickr The fact that I can add attributes to code supporting PHP versions predating the feature is absolutely fantastic. I wish more language features worked like this; it eases the path to forward migration.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@derickr I'm well aware of that. I can still hope and push for this sort of pattern, though. 😁

Welp. The Nib (https://thenib com) is shutting down. I've been a member since the beginning, and found the comics they publish to be some of the best political commentary and satire around. I'll truly miss getting their daily newsletter and quarterly print magazines. 😭

mattbors, to random

I’m afraid I have some bad news. After ten years of publishing, The Nib is going to close down this summer. Thank you for reading all these years. It's been an honor.

@mattbors Sooooooo bummed to read this! Been subscribing since the very beginning, and reading the newsletter each morning has been a highlight of my weekdays.

You've done a stellar job - only wish the maths could work in your favor!

What distro do y’all use on the ?

Yes, this is the one time you’re allowed to be like “hi I use ” and not have everyone around you roll their eyes 😉

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@brunty Ubuntu. It's basically Just Worked on any laptop I've had since 2005.

I remove all but the system snaps, add flatpak, and don't use most of the default gnome-shell extensions (I don't use the dock or desktop icons). I also use X instead of Wayland, as I've had a ton of issues with different GUI apps.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@matthewtrask Hey - thanks for reaching out. Going to have to blog what happened; culmination of burnout, and then I dislocated my shoulder while traveling alone. Back home now, and starting PT this afternoon. I've reached out to Ian with the full story.

TODAY'S QUERY

what's a comic book you love deeply, and why

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@chuckwendig Locke & Key. Amazing blend of imagination, mystery, horror, and coming of age. And don't get me started on the artwork.... Such a great series.

We do a real dumb thing with in . Most generic pizza places here put the pepperoni (which is unusually large diameter discs) between the sauce and the cheese.

Not only does this totally miss the opportunity of making your pepperoni extra delicious when it crisps up in the oven heat, but it creates an entirely stupid layer with nearly zero shear strength so all of your toppings slide off each time you pick up a hot slice.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@sean This is literally the only way I had pepperoni pizza until I moved to NY state in 2001. Even today, 2 of 5 places we frequent so it this way. 😐

I have always thought ‘protected’ is the way to go. I cannot predict an end users needs all the time, so let them extend the code as they need.

Why should I stop them from doing what they need? I’m not obligated to fix their custom code.

RT @PerttiSoomann
With the last week's PHP 'final' usage in open source software packages - should libraries try to use 'protected' over 'private' to allow users to extend/adjust functionality …
https://twitter.com/PerttiSoomann/status/1654761395206987776

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@dragonmantank I feel exactly the opposite after almost 2 decades of maintaining libraries. An OSS library IS a bounded context. When you leave it too open to extension, folks do amazing things... And then get mad when you break it during a refactor. Sure, you can tell them "not our problem", but the cycles spent responding and justifying the changes you make could be spent better.

Declaring the explicit API and extension points also promotes better extension practices such as composition.

TODAY'S VITAL INTERROGATION

What's the thing you love that everyone you know seems to hate -- and/or vice versa, what's the thing you hate that everyone around you seems to love?

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@chuckwendig The LotR and Hobbit movies. The books were okay, as fantasy adventure books go, but I found the movies to be a slog, and the battle sequences boring.

Introducing my Bluetooth headset to my Linux. Honestly one of the few remaining "cross your fingers" situations remaining on mainstream distros.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@randomgeek I've had pretty solid experience with them the past 4-5 years. That said, the codecs for mics on BT headsets when on Linux are hot garbage. I use mine only for the incoming audio, and keep a USB mic on my desk.

Can anyone point me to an article that explains why Dominion would choose to settle with Fox? From all the earlier commentary, it sounded like they had nearly smoking-gun evidence to show that Fox knowingly harmed them; it seemed almost certain they would win in court.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey While they might win (and it was nowhere near guaranteed, as there was some question about whether shield laws might apply), the award amount could be adjusted. I've seen libel suits where the award was adjusted to $1. Getting half of what they were suing for was a guaranteed outcome in comparison.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey I've seen a bunch of hot takes with people upset that "it was all about the money all along", but... I mean, it was a CIVIL case. Of COURSE it was.

Sure, there would have been some interesting findings (what we found out already was infuriating!), but the chances those would have led to criminal charges or policy reform? Call me cynical, but I just don't think either would have happened. 😦
