As I’ve been checking out bluesky, and they are putting out documents for users to comment on as they’re trying out new things (considering “lists“ right now), I’m thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of decentralized networks. I’m nothing close to an expert, just a user of #mastodon and now #bluesky (and previously #twitter). I’m concerned by the idea of unpaid moderators. “Self-moderation.” I think that doesn’t take the job of moderating a group seriously enough.

@serenebabe I'm no expert, either. But I think the Mastodon federated model is as good as you can get. Rather than one giant community, you have many communities who set their own standards and enforce their own standards.

@serenebabe That’s my best guess. Federation allows you to have a much larger ratio of moderators to users. They should make voluntary moderation more effective. But totally effective? Probably not.

    @KrissyKat Wagner is fighting Russia's military leadership. But Wagner's founder, Yevgeniy Prigozhin, is still claiming to be loyal to Putin. He's still pushing Putin's propaganda about Nazis in Ukraine.

    I had a question last night, so I googled it. The first hit was EXACTLY what I needed. It was phrased better, and promised a complete fix to my problem.

    But when I followed the link, the was still private. So I went back to my results and found the answer on a site that wasn’t .

    I know I could have looked in Google’s cache, or that other Reddit cache called . But the path of least resist was to find the info elsewhere.

    A very American (USA) problem here.. I’m watching a show that says “aired on June 18“ but today is June 18 and it’s not available to play… It’s already run in the UK, back in January, according to Google. So I’m just waiting for it to show up here. I’ve never seen it say “aired“ and still not be available. Grrrr!

    @sargasso It’s that way during the whole book. He makes a point of saying that you don’t just let anti-science people spew anti-science because it draws us all down. It’s like he was from the future. But he was simply aware of what happened in the past.
