Hi, I'm a storyteller and here is today's :

No, there is no "original" primary source on Greek mythology that has Persephone walking into the Underworld willingly. Sorry, Tumblr.

mythologymonday,
@mythologymonday@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy
I'd say that is up to interpretation. In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter she does lie and tell her mother that Hades forced her to eat the pomegranate seeds when this is not the case earlier in the text. So it's possible she ate them willingly. But the version where Persephone goes to the underworld of her own accord is a neopagan fiction from the 70s. There is a paper I highly recommend, I hope I remember when I get home.

@juergen_hubert @TarkabarkaHolgy @AimeeMaroux @mythology @folklore @curiousordinary @wihtlore @FairytalesFood @bevanthomas @FinnFolklorist @Godyssey What about turnips? They were used in Europe before pumpkins arrived from the Americas to make Jack 'o lanterns.
The gourd is used in European cuisine, referred to as "pumpkin" in some translations from Latin, but I suppose that is a Southern European thing, maybe it never made it across the Alps.
