@mythologymonday @AimeeMaroux I'd read variations of a Thai poetic saga about the prince Phra Aphai Mani. At one point he'd been seduced by a hideous giantess who disguised herself as a beautiful woman. When he realized the truth, he fled and was assisted by a family of merfolk. Unfortunately, the giantess got her hands on the mother and father merfolk, who met their end in a brutal fashion.

I picked up her album, used, from a street fair when I was in high school in the 70s and have loved that song ever since.

One of my favourite myths told in museums is that all ancient cultures had a wide range of food and drink vessels that they never ate or drank from, but which were understood purely in terms of their forms – for ancients nourished only their souls.

That's why the krater and amphora are separated from the wine cups, and why there are no chopsticks in the "Asian ceramics" case.

Both Percy Jackson nuts, so we did their Percy Jackson tour.

Watching the two 12 year olds have an absolute blast naming the Gods off the Greek Vases was amazing. Far far better than me.

Mom. It's Asclepius, not Hermes. His staff has 1 snake, no two, so it isn't the cacaduceus.

It's less of a folklore and more pure alchemy, but I was always taken with the variation between practical and philosophical alchemy, and I think the former was brilliantly epitomised by Thomas Norton's Ordinalle of Alchimy, where he tries without thermometers to define effects like "the temperature at which duck fat melts"

Alas, German folklore is fairly short on those. There are plenty of tales of treasure hunts, but surprisingly those usually do not involve maps of any kind.
