When I first heard about the missing sub, I thought it was, like, an actual proper submarine with lifeboats and that, and that was why it was such breaking news that it was missing. But it's pretty much a dustbin bolted shut. It would be more remarkable if it had succeeded in its voyage!

How do you have enough money to buy all the safety features imaginable and then say 'nah, I'll just cobble together some untested junk'?

Okay, so: Back in March Facebook's ("Meta") plans to create a "Twitter Killer" app based on the ActivityPub protocol surfaced, and... most people were positive or neutral. Also about the same time Tumblr also announced they were changing to the protocol "soon".

What happened between then and now is that Mastodon Instance admin contacted THEM, not the other way around. To be clear here Facebook did NOT seek out Mastodon admins, certain admins went to THEM and offered talks for some reason.

@guffo just read up about it. First reaction is that it's a twitter-like, federated thing run by meta to give "content creators" a space to do their "promotion" and to be frank, fuck that shit. If I wanted corporate run advertising of influencers, there's twitter for that. But I won't be making any unilateral decisions on it.

This Reddit thing is silly, It never made any money and now the investors want it to make money. Sound familiar? Companies don't have a duty to release their API and if you've built a monetised product off the back of it, they reserved the right to withdraw the API anytime, right there in the terms. If you want Reddit to change something you need to invest in them. Did you invest?

@Damo I'd agree if Reddit in itself was of value. But it's of zero value without user generated content, and opening their API is how they get that content. Which the end users provide for free.

So cutting off the most popular third party apps is a silly thing. Much better to negotiate API usage that helps Reddit make money and keeps the users supplying free content for them.

I feel like today's toots are basically going to be the origin story of how I ended up turning into a youtube video essayist. I mean it feels very unlikely that I would do that, on account of me absolutely not being comfortable in front of cameras, never mind completely unable to sit down at a computer and edit footage of myself without losing my mind. But without those obstacles, I suspect I could be a monster.

@charble in my experience, you deal with it by constantly learning.

I doubt anyone will ever have the absolute perfect untouchable truth of everything. But we keep getting closer and that process is what's important. It's why I'm a "progressive" and not an "already perfect".

Unfortunately in the current state of things, saying that people deserve medical care and basic food and water is an extreme view according to some.

I fancied a bit of metal for today's art session background music. I've never really listened to Slipknot but thought, hey let's try something new.

This was NOT what I expected. Yeah there's growly yelling angry screams, but contrasted with symphonic sweet vocals and melodies that come out of nowhere. Wow.

Listening to some feedback about the art style made me re-evaluate some of the types of detail I'm putting into the sprites. I always wanted to go for a "cel-shading in pixels" look, but got diverted with edge shading and other stuff. Took out a lot of highlights and other stuff from Ren, and she fits much better into the universe now. There's still big chunks of shading, but no more twiddly little detail where it doesn't really add anything. And it all fits!

This is the style I'm going for now. Bands of shading to add shape, not to reflect a light source. Shadow to add atmosphere. As Stephanie Sterling says, technically "bad" art is FINE as long as it's a stylistic choice and it's CONSISTENT.

@alda I haven't really enjoyed Doctor Who for a while, but I'm not going to demand the BBC wipe all modern episodes and rebroadcast the Tom Baker era on repeat, in a loop stretching to the end of time. The show moved on!
