I was today years old when I had to ask a software architect and a devops engineer to follow the git branching model... Or pick a different one.

Every time something comes to the Apple ecosystem that all of us already had outside of it, they praise it as "easier" and "better"...
I've got a tablet, a phone, a computer, and several portable devices that allow me to easily play all the games I want!
I had a gaming phone like 10 years ago (JXD-S7800b).

Follow up question: why?

stefan, to accessibility
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

The thing that trips me up about making hashtags accessible on social media, by capitalizing each word JustLikeThis, are words like WordPress, or ActivityPub.

I'm guessing these should be all lowercase, so that screen readers don't read these as two separate words?

I'm really starting to see the benefits of allowing spaces in hashtags.

rebeccafinn,
@rebeccafinn@topspicy.social avatar

@aardrian @stefan yup, though I'd also like the idea of allowing hashtags like they do it in Tumblr. ๐Ÿ˜Š

eniko, to random

It's kind of absurd that your options on fedi are to opt into literally all CWs and having to manually expand them all or opting into none of them ever. You should be able to have a list of words that collapse CWs automatically but otherwise have them open by default

I know that glitch already solves this via regex but it's client side. This really should be stored in your account so it works across devices and applications automatically

rebeccafinn,
@rebeccafinn@topspicy.social avatar

@eniko I dunno about this, I prefer to opt-in rather than opt-out and CW's help with that, but that's not enough for my case, sadly.
Which is why I'm using filters: I cannot trust y'all won't post stuff that will trigger my PTSD, nor that y'all will respect my boundaries about any specific topic.
I think safety for some users make it worth it that some can tolerate some minor inconvenience. What do you think?

humbly remembering Iโ€™m ~50% fluent in Spanish as rewatching something always reveals things I missed the first time (first several times)

I definitely thought Marta was saying her husband hated her for their lack of bedroom activities but she was actually saying โ€œIโ€™m worried about disappointing you [(Fina) in bed]โ€

My misinterpretation of โ€œvais a tener que veros a siempre escondidasโ€ was funny at least

tbh Spain can keep its vosotros to itself, castellano is hard enough

๐Ÿ˜ค gonna sue the RAE

rebeccafinn,
@rebeccafinn@topspicy.social avatar

@shippychaos @minka this would be the same as pitting American vs British English.
If 'vosotros' sounds cool, good on you, most Spanish speakers only read/hear it in the religious stuff.
BTW, there's no LATAM Spanish either... But if I get to the nitty gritty of it, we'll have to talk about colonialism and some people get weirdly political or nationalist about it.

Regardless of your beliefs about Twitter/X... I've seen (and now am a victim of) content farming accounts that just repost other people's TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube video clips, then other accounts with millions of followers (and billions of monetized tweet views) repost the content and earn money off the original content.

The hot dog radio video clip is being posted and reposted on Twitterโ€”I called someone out on it, then got blocked by that user :P

rebeccafinn,
@rebeccafinn@topspicy.social avatar

@geerlingguy the thing I fail to see is why would anyone want to remain there?
What is there that could be of any benefit to anyone? The extremists? The fake accounts? The negligence in content moderation? The intolerance?

Someoneโ€™s trying to build an alternative to Nextcloud. Iโ€™m very hopeful for this. https://bewcloud.com

rebeccafinn,
@rebeccafinn@topspicy.social avatar

@ernie what was disappointing for me about own/next cloud was that there's required settings in the database that make it impossible to self-host in cheapy shared hosting solutions.
"Ah but there's an alternative, you just need to"... No. I tried it and it's also not supported.

If an Apple device has a nonsensical limitation, the reason said limitation exists is simple: Apple intentionally designed it from the ground up to have that limitation.

People are very upset about replies and unsolicited advice..

It makes me wonder about other ways to build consent into social media ux, like the little warning that appears when you're about to reply to someone not in your network, if you could configure that for your own account to say "if I'm not explicitly asking a question please don't give me advice" or whatever idk

rebeccafinn,

@sue I think that a setting like Insta's "block comments" would help.

Just a thought - when discussing beginner developers and how to help them and what comes first - consider that I basically started again 3ish years ago.

So yeah, I knew how to use FTP and how to write HTML, CSS, and some rudimentary JS and PHP/MySQL stuff. But only at a low down hobby level. I was using Notepad++.

I remember very well - it was so recent! - the confusion I felt. New to me was git, node, npm, frameworks, ES6, and all the new CSS over the last decade. It's not long ago I was new.

rebeccafinn,
@rebeccafinn@topspicy.social avatar

@sarajw
I would begin with a general understanding of file systems, the term "upload" and "download" (so understanding FTP is simpler)
Then semantic HTML.
Once that is understood, CSS.
*
One can get git in here...
Next, I would go into understanding either functional or object oriented programming, then JS.
*
With these OOTW,
node and, only then,
*
any frameworks.
Why? You can get off this learning path at the asterisks and still do great things on the web ๐Ÿ˜Š

"But for todayโ€™s problems, until those big picture projects yield results in making Gotham a safer and happier place, thatโ€™s what Batman is for. " is such a conservative POV.
