I was clearing out some old photos and videos from my hard drive and came across this photo of the Leiden University Medical Centre.

Maybe it's just because I went to a really ugly University, but this looks SO nice to me. :)

@notjustbikes A bit old and I'm guessing you've already seen it. But they're going crazy for you in the comments on this Avondshow segment :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Stn0cGWH9go.

@cameronmochrie wow. Amazingly nobody has sent this to me yet. 😂

@notjustbikes For your entertainment. Motorist in Amsterdam admits: “Those bicyclists, they damage your car and disappear”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bizarro_Jerry When interviewed about the new small experiment to allow fast bicyclists (read: e-bike) to use the car lane, because the narrow bike lane reached its capacity. https://www.at5.nl/artikelen/226216/snelle-fietsers-voor-het-eerst-de-rijbaan-op-in-west-we-denken-dat-het-veilig-kan

Strong Towns has a new book coming out!

Chuck and Daniel Herriges' are about to release their book, "Escaping The Housing Trap". It's a great delve into the housing crisis in North America, and what's causing it, including the part that's almost never mentioned in the media: car dependency.

You can pre-order a copy now via the links on their website:

I was cleaning out some old video files and I came across this gem from Associate Professor Brian Doucet at the UofW School of Planning (bmdoucet on the bad site).

This was taken in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada the city where I went to University.

It boggles my mind that Canadian traffic engineering can be so broken that something like this gets built.

How did nobody along the path to getting this created say, "why are we building it like this when you'd have to be fucking insane to cycle here?"

Painted bicycle lane between two traffic lanes and an entrance to a highway with large amounts of motor vehicle traffic.

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@martin_ueding This is bad, but it is nowhere near as dangerous as the Canadian example.

This is not a highway entrance it's an urban area. The speed limit is lower, the lane on the right is primarily for buses, there will be much fewer heavy trucks, and the speed differential between cyclists and drivers is more comparable.

@notjustbikes on my way to a DHL servicepoint in the harbour I was just thinking of your praise for bikelanes in industrial zones, instead of only downtown, when I saw this sign. A dedicated spot where truckers can adjust their mirrors so they won’t miss bicyclists!

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@rrustema020 wow! that's really interesting.

Is there a mock bicycle that the truck parks next to, in order to adjust the mirrors?

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@rrustema020 oh wow, thanks for the info! This is great!

I'll mark these locations and make a YouTube Shorts video about these if I'm in the area of one.

Waiting with the rest of the crowd for the spits (rush hour) to end at Utrecht Centraal, so that my train ride to Amsterdam is 40% cheaper. 😉

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@mausmalone it's criminal that train passengers need to pay more at rush hour but car drivers pay nothing.

I'm going to Japan soon, so I wanted to talk to one of the experts, Life Where I'm From, about what I should look for when I'm there, and we ended up having a great conversation about why Japan has stayed (relatively) affordable while other developed nations have not!

Hear our conversation in the latest episode of the Urbanist Agenda podcast (currently early-access for Nebula supporters, public release next week).

@albert yes, I bet! I've been to Japan over a dozen times but this will be the first time where I'm free to do whatever I want instead of just going for a business trip!

... which just means that I'm going to ride a lot of trains.

weethet, to Cyprus
@weethet@toot.community avatar

@notjustbikes, you are talking a lot in your videos about how great transit is in Europe compared to the US. Have you seen Cyprus? Like it's depressing how close it is to being a small US copy (or at times, even worse). It's an actual hellscape for pedestrian, and the stats show it (0.1% of people walk 30 or more minutes a day)

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@weethet well, cars are parked on the sidewalk, but it doesn't look THAT bad. The buildings are near the road, there's a sidewalk, and destinations look relatively close together.

They definitely need more illegal parking enforcement, and Cyprus could stand to have a lot more walking paths and cycling lanes, but saying it's "worse" than the US is very exaggerated.

Cyprus could be great with just a few small changes. The only thing missing is political will.

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@weethet yes, that's very common pretty much everywhere.

    @GhostOnTheHalfShell What's really hilarious is that I talk about solutions IN THAT VIDEO (though Vaush ends before he gets to that part), and that stroads video is part of my Strong Towns playlist.

    Another reminder of why I'm trying to reduce the % of Americans in my audience.

    The Internet is stupid sometimes. I'm glad that Vaush (of all people) has my back at least.

    @haentz @GhostOnTheHalfShell lol nothing new; that chat is literally the shit I get on a daily basis on social media. See my post, linked below.

    I really don't understand why these people can't just go ... watch something else.

    There's actually another urbanist creator who purposefully fans the flames, and a lot of these terminally online losers are members of his Discord.

    This is why I don't use social media (except Mastodon, which is mostly Europeans).

    One of the most annoying things about being an English-language content creator are the Americans who insist that everything must be about them.

    I can make a video that never mentions the US once, and I will get hundreds of responses about the US.

    I will get people claiming that I'm wrong because of some issue unique to the US.

    I will get Americans telling me that I have a moral responsibility to help them fix their cities, despite the fact that I'm not American and I don't live there.

    notjustbikes,
    @notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

    @Damax I will be going to Japan in a few weeks.

    Where is this street where the houses will be destroyed to connect two stroads? I'd actually like to film that and talk about that.

    I have a bunch of topics in mind for Japan, but one of them will be how car-centric a lot of places are, so this would be a great inclusion.
