recent discussion about "ethical" licenses got me thinking a bit
you can't restrict use with a copyright license, but in general you should try to turn restrictions into obligations

❌: "you may not distribute* this software for bigoted purposes"
⭕️: "when distributing this software, you must state that trans rights are human rights"

the latter is significantly closer to the OSD, since it's non-discriminatory
I don't know if it would be approved by the OSI, and distros may not like it, but it's in my opinion a much better way to scare asshats away from forking your project without setting yourself up as a liability for your downstreams

at the end of the day though, I'm partial to simply not doing this at all

  • remember, copyright licenses only cover the distribution of copies

@apophis I mean, they're technically correct
but that doesn't make it any less nonsensical

>The name "Molotov cocktail" was coined by the Finns during the Winter War (Finnish: Molotovin cocktail) in 1939.[10][11][12] The name was a pejorative reference to Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov, who was one of the architects of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact on the eve of World War II.

I kinda just don’t care what the OSI thinks <3 https://hazy.sh/blog/i-dont-care-what-the-osi-thinks

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@h @whitequark the terms may not be as unambiguous as you think they are
you're not a lawyer, a lawyer's job is to find loopholes in legal text
this license was very likely not written or reviewed by lawyers either

whitequark's replies aren't an attempt to paint your intentions as hostile, it's just trying to show you how this can be dangerous
also keep in mind that it's not just you, open source software implies shared ownership of copyright, which means your contributors could also become poison by getting patches into your project and then using that position to do what you wouldn't

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@whitequark it's cool, I still found your insight on this valuable personally

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@whitequark thanks! I hadn't thought of dual licensing to pull in the patent clause, that's a good idea
reminds me that this is why rust uses MIT/APL2 and I completely forgot

terminfo kinda just sucks

why not just have a few capabilities env vars instead of something you need to install on the system and query by terminal name...?

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@navi better yet, why not query it from the terminal itself via escape sequences?

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@navi the terminal just sends inputs in response, check out foot-ctlseqs(7) for a few examples
search for XTGETTCAP which does exactly what I'm describing

I want to build / get a travel router / hardware VPN which connects to a network wirelessly or via RJ-45 and creates a new Wi-Fi (& maybe a wired connection to the new network) to which I can connect my devices and everything gets tunneled either through Mullvad or through my home network. Maybe it can even throw the traffic into Pi-hole before tunneling.
What hardware would I need? (As compact, as cheap-ish and as efficient as possible)

:boost_requested:

@MagicLike as mentioned in another reply, pretty much anything that can run openwrt will do
there's a bunch of form factors, quite a few pocket-sized travel routers and SBCs are supported

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@MagicLike something like a nanopi r2s maybe? no built-in wifi unfortunately, and I can't really recommend any USB dongles

I don't really keep up with the market though, and choosing a router, especially to run openwrt on, is hours if not days of research

a raspberry pi has the benefit of being well-supported, there are off the shelf cases for it, and you can add a cheap USB dongle for that second Ethernet port
a model 3b or 3b+ is more than enough too, no need to go for the latest

that's about the extent of what I can recommend, sorry

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@MagicLike yeah I agree with the cop thing, what's with the spy chip thing though? first I've heard of it

novenary,
@novenary@akko.wtf avatar

@MagicLike I'm struggling to find any info on this
in general it's difficult for hardware to access the network without assistance from the OS so I doubt that's actually happening
there probably is telemetry in rpi os but if you're going to run openwrt this isn't a concern
