Putting together a conference talk on monetizing visionOS apps and I'd love to get some thoughts from ya'll 👂

If you've released a visionOS only app (not cross-platform) did you go paid-up-front, 1-time in-app purchase, or subscription and why?

oliverw,
@oliverw@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman Our first app Day Ahead https://www.contxtu.al/dayahead is paid up front $2.99, our second one (and even smaller utility) will be free with an small in-app purchase for non-essential nice-to-have’s. They’re our first apps (day to day we’re a UX consultancy, not Dev), so it’s all an experiment for us. Also likely to explore bundling.

I just walked around a. window while using Vision Pro. As if it was actually there. lol.

Walking through the windows kinda messes with your mind a bit.

oliverw,

@pixel The closest thing I can think of is that it feels ‘disrespectful’ to walk through the app window. :-D

A nice surprise! I was driving along listening to the Connected (https://www.relay.fm/connected) podcast with @imyke @viticci and @ismh talking about Apple Vision Pro apps when I hear Myke say: “Like also that one Day Ahead, I immediately bought that. That is a very cool idea about how to visualise your calendar, so I thought that was really cool.” :-) More info: https://www.contxtu.al/dayahead or the podcast: https://overcast.fm/+FXx6H1L-4/1:19:35

@imyke @viticci @ismh A huge thanks to @imyke we’re a tiny team and this shoutout means a lot. And then we heard your shoutout on Upgrade too! It’s very appreciated.

Honest thought that has been nagging me for a while now: do I ever buy another iPad Pro now that Vision Pro exists? Especially with an incoming price hike, as rumored, that might bring the two product lines much closer in price. A MacBook Air with Mac Virtual Display in visionOS provides that escape hatch that gives me everything iPad never did, and visionOS effectively runs all the same software as iPad. Is direct touch really that important to me if I'm not drawing with a Pencil?

It is still very weird to ship an app that I've only run on a device for a handful of hours back in August.

At least it’s basically just 2D (hidden bananas aside) - my hat is off to anybody that's shipped a full 3D app today, that's much harder to pull off developing in the simulator.

And congratulations to the Apple people who have been working on this stuff for literally years!

oliverw,
@oliverw@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson We started 3D, but we started small :-) Day Ahead is an overview of your day's events in elegant 3D. It provides a beautiful, glanceable overview of your Apple Calendar events for the day, so you can always see your next meeting and tap to find out more. You can customise the event colour and view it vertically or horizontally to best suit your Spatial Computing workspace.

oliverw,
@oliverw@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson Thanks :-) Hopefully it’s the first in a few that we’re nicknaming “Desk Excessories” as a homage to the earliest Macintosh operating system Desk Accessories and felt that it was appropriate for visionOS, as the metaphorical desktop can now be replaced with a physical desktop and/or the Spatial Computing workspace. We see the opportunity for people to create highly customised workspaces and have these utilities provide glanceable ambient information visualisations.

Vision Pro is a VR headset without controllers to play VR games, a media headset without support from the top streaming services, and a ‘spatial computer’ that can only run [some] iPad apps.

…and even still, I'm excited to have one 🤣

I don’t have a wisecrack or snark — this takes a lot of courage and a lot of vision to do. It’s worth celebrating that there’s talented people trying to do something very different.

oliverw, (edited )
@oliverw@mastodon.social avatar

@sdw Agreed, but it’s a big jump from people’s current behaviour. I think one of the things Apple have done well with Apple Vision Pro is provided a transition path from current computing to spatial computing (use your Mac & iPad apps in this new Spatial Computing experience). This feels more like going cold turkey on mobile and I expect that the benefits of the experience only really happen when you’re fully invested. I’d like to try it https://mastodon.social/@oliverw/111382046717840301

@pschiller Glad the term ‘Spatial Computing’ is being used, it includes a wider range of capability and interaction than just Augmented Reality or VR. And of course it’s great that the “M” word wasn’t used…

@paul Designing spatial computing (beyond the 2D screens shown) will allow for integration of digital content into the real world in a much deeper way. See some video examples here: https://www.contxtu.al/apple-ar/apple's-music-and-light
