Almost all bday party invites for my 4 year old specify "No gifts please" or "No gifts necessary" - and I totally get why, I added it to hers as well. Are we moving towards a society that's not so into gifting? Or is this only a thing at certain income levels?

ology,
@ology@fosstodon.org avatar

@pamelafox It's gotta be about not wanting your guests to feel obligated to spend money.

Honest curiosity: Why do people feel the need to "praise God"? Is God really in need of praise? Does God have poor self-esteem, or something? Did God do something that humans need to encourage? Or is this actually some sort of act for other people somehow - and God doesn't really care?

Added a visualization program to my https://metacpan.org/dist/Synth-Config module. Here's one of the simplest modular patches.

So I went to add US holidays to the "private community site" app I'm finishing up. But found that there is no such (working) module! Wow. So I made one (well two actually): https://metacpan.org/pod/Date::Holidays::USA (and https://metacpan.org/pod/Date::Holidays::Adapter::USA to go along with it). 😅

Vote for @simcop2387 for https://news.perlfoundation.org/post/white-camel-2024-nominations like me! He is a rockstar who has maintained a number of super-valuable tools for perl people on the for years and years. He has also setup and maintains https://perl.social/community 😀

mjgardner, to raku

@Perl Per @PerlRakuFoundation's announcement yesterday,* The & Conference 2024 in Las Vegas is now accepting proposals for live in-person session talks! https://tprc.us/talks

Need ideas? That page also has previous conference schedules as well as a wiki link to request topics.

New this year: a peer-reviewed track with its own process: https://science.PerlCommunity.org

Both Ghostery and Consent-O-Matic automatically click through cookie consent banners for you (selecting minimal consent). I can highly recommend using one of them, it makes the web easier to browse.

I've only used Consent-O-Matic though, and while it gets rid of most cookie banners, it isn't able to get through all of them, often when companies use "legitimate interest" in their banners.

Has anybody compared the two tools, or knows if Ghostery manages to click-through all cookie banners?

ology,
@ology@fosstodon.org avatar

@Brendanjones Haven't compared, but I use Ghostery and it seems to do minimal cookie selection fine. :)

ology,
@ology@fosstodon.org avatar

@Brendanjones Completely? Not sure. I go to common places like stackoverflow where it works...

You're not a real Linux enthusiast unless you use a terminal with light opacity so you can see your anime waifu wallpaper in the background while you code.

ology,
@ology@fosstodon.org avatar

@btp Annoyingly, my work issued, managed laptop has a number of mandated settings, of course. And unfortunately one is an ugly "HR splashscreen" with the company "ideals" and pithy graphic representations for the desktop background, which totally defeats my transparent terminals. Argh 😠

Canon in probabiliD

totally mangled with {midiblender}, sounds not good, but fun to mess with.

ology,

@MattCrumpLab Is this a probabilistic rendering of an existing piece? Or an original? How is it probabilistic? Via some code possibly? :)

ology,
@ology@fosstodon.org avatar

@MattCrumpLab This makes me think of the module https://metacpan.org/dist/MIDI-Ngram - Not about probabilities though.

Maybe I'm naive, but I grew up understanding that meant simply that "you get to keep the money you earn." So I'm baffled by the seething hatred - especially in America.

@HeavenlyPossum @mjgardner Not sure if this is accurate. It is second hand info. I can't find her journal entries yet...

"[My hero is] very far from him, of course. The outside of Hickman, but not the inside. Much deeper and much more. A Hickman with a purpose. And without the degeneracy. It is more exact to say that the model is not Hickman, but what Hickman suggested to me."

She was an author. They research characters.

I'm also disheartened by 's continued dominance despite unfair compensation. I cringe every time I notice my instructor cueing up playlists on the studio's music PC.

Making a 1-stop portal page for my 96 year old grandma, who uses her Windows computer, but can't remember a lot of details any more... Like where things are, and what tiny thing to click. Using large Bootstrap buttons to open new tabs to her gmail, etc., to launch her LibreOffice, to open her Documents and Downloads folders, etc. All done with Strawberry and of course. 😅

Watching some of the vids coming out of this year's Perl and Raku Conference. Ingy döt؜؜ Net's talk on his work on Lingy and YAMLScript was pretty amazing.

Lingy is a hosted on - Perl code can call Lingy code can call Perl code. The idea of having a Lingy VM with JIT is very appealing.

YAMLScript is a YAML-style dialect of Lingy (or any Clojure implementation), for those who don't like LISP style.

Check the talk out here: https://youtu.be/9OcFh-HaCyI
