Hey type designers!

Is there another term that has been adopted to replace the obviously heavy-laden “master/slave” in reference to type design?

Working on a project where the font files have been “re-mastered” and I would love to use a different word.

Found this guide for Inclusive Naming: https://inclusivenaming.org/word-lists/ but very curious to hear from actual type designers.

@belluzj That is where it gets tricky. I wouldn't say these were "re-drawn" because there were not changes to the curves or points; more changes to production aspects like names, vertical metrics, etc.

While having a chat with another type specimen book collector, we talked about collecting books in various conditions.

Here are two versions of the same Linotype “Big Red“ book from my collection.

The older, used copy is the first one given to me when I started making my film. The practically brand new one is one I found on eBay after years of searching.

Both are special to me in their own way and both have their own history.

While traveling today, I pulled off the highway to find a place to use the bathroom and stumbled upon a really awesome computer museum. As soon as I pulled up I saw a Cray 1 through the window.

We didn't have an appt for a tour, but the owner spent an hour and a half walking us through everything. Super awesome place. If you're ever in the Cockeysville, MD area, check out the System Source Computer Museum!

I'd like to use analytics again for my personal site. I don't need much — just visits, uniques, page views (and maybe not even all of those), and a referrer list (also optional).

Looked at Fathom, Plausible and for a brief time I used Netlify, but found $9/month a bit too much for how little I use analytics: to gauge a pulse, more than a deep dive into metrics.

Is there anything cheaper or simpler out there?

If not, would love to see a dead simple offering at $1-3/month.

Since some people have asked me, here's a quick thread on initial experience comparison between Bluesky and the fediverse. It's important to note that this comparison is somewhat absurd by default because Bluesky is still tiny & unproven, but there's interest so I'm happy to share what I've observed. Also, I don't get into protocol differences because honestly who cares. So:

When I was growing up, my best friend and I would hang out and host pretend NPR broadcasts. (On our version of Morning Edition, she was Linda Wertheimer, and I was Robert Siegel.)

The chance to be in an episode of This American Life is beyond anything I could have imagined for myself as a kid.

Grateful to @caseynewton for helping me tell this love story for trust and safety. To my friends and colleagues in internet sanitation: I hope I’ve done you proud.

Yeah, yeah, machine learning and everything can upscale your photo through magic… but I am still amazed how naïvely upping the resolution and then adding a little noise can trick your brain into thinking an image is more detailed than it actually is.
