Kia is killing it with EVs. This feels like a successor to the Niro, unless that little guy lives on as a cheaper model, but: 372-mile range, chunky good looks, seats 5. Honestly, I may wait to see this one. Coming to the US in 2025 or 2026.

In contrast, US manufacturers are sticking with overpriced EV SUVs with features like Has No CarPlay and Does Crab Walk You'll Never Actually Use.

What will be next after the phased-out TouchBar, the quietly dropped butterfly keyboard, the cancelled car and the lackluster goggles?

I bet it will be AI.

(Don't get me wrong, Tim Cook has done amazing at having grown Apple after Jobs' passing and it's great that Apple listens to customers to fix issues [like the laptop keyboards], but he's just not the guy for great new products.)

paulmcaleer,
@paulmcaleer@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Yep. Cook is an amazing operational leader. He is not a product visionary, and he seemingly has no Ive replacement to act as a foil or counterpart.

"Initial plans for the line from Denver to Boulder, and then northeast diagonally to Longmont, would run three inbound commuter trains in the morning, and three outbound trains in the evening."

Gonna need more than 6 trains a day for this to really take off. I want all of this to succeed; this is basically Denver/Boulder signing up for a heavy rail akin to Metra in Chicagoland or Caltrain in SF and I am here for it. LET'S GET IT.

Comically shortsighted approach by the DEN City Council. The neighborhoods around Peña are filling in, so people will be living near A Line stations… but this quote is so lousy:

“The A Line is great, I love it,” [Councilmember Kevin Flynn] said. “But I can’t ask everyone in the Denver metro area or the state of Colorado to drive to an A Line station to get to the airport.”

To the Safari team: I beg you, please never get rid of the POOF animation that shows up when you delete a bookmark from the bookmark bar. It's a tiny moment of delight in this otherwise extremely functional UI situation we're in these days. If I can't have Happy Mac, I'll keep poof.

LONG LIVE THE POOF.

Hyundai has an Ionic 5 N edition EV coming out where in race mode, it requires "gearshifts" to go faster. If you don't change gears, the engine will "max out" at a fake RPM while making fake engine noises until you tap the upshift paddle and honestly, as weird as it sounds, it's exactly why people still drive manual transmission sports cars and I kind of love an EV can turn it on and off at a whim for fun.

Yes, it's an artificial simulacrum, but a good one:

@mathowie I applaud Hyundai’s weirdness. Reminds me of old Honda. (The Ioniq 6 is decidedly weird. But also good! And weird.)

The death of the writer has arrived. Vox have pretty much nailed it in their piece on self promotion.

In the social media era, writers must become podcasters, graphic designers, videographers, and conventionally attractive TikTok models to gain an audience.

The profession of "writer" no longer exists - only the "influencer" remains.

A thread on the demise of the solitary writing life…

paulmcaleer,
@paulmcaleer@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan Super perceptive & thoughtful stuff. An adjacent idea I've toyed with for a while is how social media has given anyone the ability to be a celebrity without any of the support, protection (financial or otherwise), and privacy that many celebs have, largely due to money and power. We're always performing. Fame is a monster, as they say.
