I’m a software developer from Poland living in Northampton, UK. I’m a web standards, accessibility and performance enthusiast. Recently, I have enjoyed coding in Rust. After hours, I listen to funky records.

Consistent blogging on my personal website is one of the best things that I have ever done. Yesterday, I received this email from one of my readers. This is so kind and helpful 🫶

P.S. Yes, I am still looking for a new job.

Dear Hiring Manager at @nintendo,

I am writing to express my interest in the Software Engineer position at Nintendo. With my strong technical background and expertise in error handling, I believe I would be a valuable addition to your team 😜

Thanks @matthiasott for introducing me to the Tim Ferriss podcast. It is good!

I really enjoyed the conversation with @photomatt, especially the part about the comments section.

I have built a small comments engine for my website, which is highly opinionated. However, it lacks several features that you mentioned in your blog post. I am still unsure about Webmentions and would appreciate someone convincing me that it is a good idea. This is probably the last piece of IndieWeb I am unsure about.

pawelgrzybek,
@pawelgrzybek@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott Okay, at this point, most of my questions are probably related to the technical aspect of things, but I am going to leave that for later.

@matthiasott I see Webmentions implemented on your website. I know that @mxbck also has it beautifully implemented. Do you guys know any other good examples that I can check to motivate me to actually implement it on my site?

@matthiasott Oh wow! I did the same. Last time I had a drink exactly 356 days ago, just like you. It's one of the best things I have ever done!

Of course I blogged about it!

It is the time of year when I enjoy reading your annual summaries on your personal websites. This year is quieter with your reviews than a year before. If you published one, send it my way, please.

These are the ones I read so far.

The CSS :nth-child selector has become a lot more powerful in 2023. It now supports the :nth-child(An+B [of S]?) notation, and it is supported by all major browsers.

There is still a shocking number of developers using JS to remove the border from the last div.

I wanted to publish a post about all the cool stuff you can do using :nth-child(), but @bramus has already published it. Good one!

Embarrassing confession of a developer with over a decade of experience (me).

  1. I don't know how to write regex patterns.
  2. I don't know SQL.

🤷‍♂️

Let’s suppose a friend without any coding experience wants to get started with a personal website.

What advice would you give and which service – or approach – would you recommend?

And yes, I’m asking for my #OwnYourWeb newsletter subscribers again. 😉 RT=🎉

@matthiasott I would definitely NOT recommend any tools or frameworks. Instead, I would teach them very basics of dev tools.

I listen to most podcasts in English 🇬🇧 x2.5 times the normal speed. I can barely understand a single word in Polish 🇵🇱 podcasts when I play them at double speed. English is much easier to understand than Polish when it's sped up!

I am Polish, and it is really surprising to me how I trained my brain to listen to the English language.
