I am getting a new computer for an elderly and to be able to support it, I'm removing the Windows and want to install a distro. They have previously used Ubuntu Budgie for about 4 years. Which one of these distros do you suggest for lower maintenance burden in the long run?

Fedora Budgie or Atomic Budgie or even Ubuntu. Basically since these gets them back on familiar territory with Budgie and should give them a good experience with all bases.

Too early in my Solus journey so not comfortable to personally recommend it yet.

@Mehrad If you go the atomic route then install all apps through flathub and not as fedora flatpaks to get all media/codecs working/included ootb.

And clarification/further comment on the DE i think keeping something they are familiar with might be worth it to ensure they dont feel too overwhelmed or frustrated and instead choose a base that you are more comfortable with in case something does happen.

Kinoite is great. I spent the Fedora 39 cycle and a few months with 40 on it. Iirc krdp is included and should be working so that should make remote management a bit easier, should the need ever arise. ๐Ÿ™‚

All updates are handled through Discover, but no (functioning) auto update support yet. It is WIP, hopefully for 41. So if you do go the Kinoite route do remember to teach them how to do updates a whatever interval you think is needed ๐Ÿ‘

@Mehrad Oh and if you do end up going with Atomic (Kinoite/Silverblue et al) and using rpmfusion then it is a good idea to remove the versionlock right away to avoid any future issues ๐Ÿ˜„

I got tickled by @Solus a few days ago when i stumbled across their prompt postings on resolving issues with the latest update so i now have it running on two devices so i can try it out and see how i like it.

Seems hibernation does not work on the laptop even though i chose to enable swap with hibernation at install but thats about it so far.

Besides that first impressions are positive, they seem to have a great community filled with friendly and helpful users, and even some devs seem to be active on their forums. Also their help docs seem good. One thing i really appreciated was how easy it was to find all the packages and other resources since everything is on github. They also seem to have done a lot of restructuring since the kerfuffle.

@ivory Hey, Any plans to have account muting reworked so it syncs both ways?

As far as I can tell you do respect mutes that I have enabled on my instance/web but mutes that I enable in Ivory is not synced back to my instance. Kind of annoying having to bookmark accounts I want to mute and then open up my home instance in a browser and mute the account that way to be certain the mute works.

Firefox 124.0.2 was released 11 days ago. Librewolf got bumped the day after and yet the flathub version is still on 124.0.1.

I'm seriously starting to consider moving away from the atomic (immutable) desktop so i can install release and beta versions of the browsers i alternate between and not have to rely on forks ๐Ÿ˜„
