Well-equipped commuter guy with fat tire bike and a giant backpack straight gawking at my bakfiets like he's having a revelation

QasimRashid, to random
@QasimRashid@mastodon.social avatar

So to summarize:
Adopting BDS is criminalized
Criticizing Israel is antisemitic
Appealing to ICJ is unwarranted
Funding UNRWA is banned
Appealing to ICC Is banned
Ending the occupation is off the table
Ending the settlements is off the table
The peaceful Great March of Return is banned
Protesting peacefully on college campuses is antisemitic
Demanding return of Palestinian children held in indefinite detention in Israeli prisons is not even an option

So what are Palestinians supposed to do??

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

@QasimRashid How do I pin this to my profile

Just finished a religious studies course that was a scriptural studies approach to the Qur'an and so basically

I can discuss topics related to quranic exegesis with some confidence; islamic esotericism is my specialty

but don't ask me why muslims fast for 30 days during Ramadan, I will have to search wikipedia, I am an asshole and I pledge to do better

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

Which to be fair that's the definition of the course is it's not about Islam it's about the Qur'an as scripture but I still feel like I missed a step

Ask me about the doctrine of inimitability and what it means to be an ummi nation though

It turns out one of the biggest bicycle theft crime rings in Toronto was orchestrated by a local bike shop owner, because bike theft stimulates bike shop sales

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/police-astonished-as-number-of-stolen-bikes-recovered-passes-2-000-1.725034

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

He didn't sell the stolen bikes, he just squirreled them away in a rental indefinitely, preferring to sell new bikes instead

This would seem ingenious until you consider the margin on new bikes is never more than 30%

So I think I have a cool idea for a car dealership

mcc, to random
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

I bet if you formed an electric car company made only of people who previously worked for Tesla then quit in disgust, you could make a really good electric car company

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

@mcc IIRC that's Canoo

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

@mcc Browsed their career section and it looks like yes to both: you could have your pick

https://www.canoo.com/

This would be a really interesting time to join the company. They're so close to finally delivering vehicles and unlocking revenue and if they don't do it this year they'll run out of money

"Stop what you're doing" is in every strategic playbook except the one MBAs use

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

If an MBA is saying it, it's a euphemism for "pause temporarily so we can continue"

A note for counter-protestors:

Waving a giant flag of Israel in the background of what most people perceive as chaos is not sending the message you think it is lol

mcnado, to random

Someone explain to me the argument for snipers at a student protest.

I have seen zero reports of protest-related shootings. I have seen zero reports of cops being killed by students. I have seen zero reports of students taking hostages. Why the everloving fuck are cop shops putting guys with guns on the roof? It makes no sense.

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

@mcnado Maintaining the deterrence regime, maintaining "the edge" (a specific kind of terrorism law enforcement trains in: controlling with fear by projecting superior force and unpredictability), etc

They're not neutral: they represent "a side" and a rebuttal - they're both representatives and rhetoric

"I can't understand why these liberals aren't liberaling"

I mean the confusing part is why do democrats let right-wing talk radio define them. Democrats are not liberals, they're democrats

The reason they're not doing the stuff liberals are supposed to do is because they're not liberals and never have been: democrats are conservatives.

Similarly the so-called conservative party isn't conservative at all - they're anti-democratic radicals

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

The entire "vote for us to preserve the current constitutional form of government" thing is 1000% a conservative argument that is only coincidentally aligned with liberal values (because what the other side is proposing happens to be worse for individual liberties)

peter, to random
@peter@thepit.social avatar

the cops and liberal leaders have signaled that college protestors are not protected by the rule of law, so now the right-wing brawlers have showed up to attack them, right on schedule. great job everyone. https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/ucla-leaders-declare-pro-palestinian-encampment-as-unlawful-orders-everyone-to-leave/

pleaseclap,

@peter (It doesn't change your point in any way but it's worth considering: Universities are conservative institutions, every single one of them)

pleaseclap, to random

Midwestern college protests be like: "yes I'm in, you know I'm there for an encampment just wait until after move-out ok?"

Critics of divestment (including the WSJ editorial today) are completely missing the point

It's irrelevant whether a single investor divesting will "work" all on its own to achieve results. What's relevant is that when you have a choice to not fund and profit from apartheid and genocide, you make the right choice. It's not a math problem (it's not even a hard problem)

pleaseclap,
@pleaseclap@urbanists.social avatar

If our institutions can't make the right choice: they can't remain as they are

You know the tiktok "female" text-to-speech voice in a lot of viral videos

Many of those videos are viral/popular because people are arguing with the voiceover because presenting an opinion as a robot woman invites the entire patriarchy to take a dump on your comments

So, like, you might be thinking:

"I know Walt Disney was associated with the German American Bund but he's dead now and Disney is a non-ideological public company"

and that seems reasonable: we're in modern times and stuff

until you find out that one job at Disneyland these days is staff who cheer for you on command: you "activate" this free service by stepping in designated squares in front of them. Like NPCs they just wait there until "a player" steps in the square

They're propagandizing how great life can be if only you have a pacified underclass catering to your every (stupid) whim
