If you've never seen Casablanca (I hadn't), it's on iView now and is a really good movie, of the correct length (100 minutes)

Personally, I'd stop emphasising the role of news sharing on social media, and just institute a levy straight onto Google and Meta to subsidise public service journalism.

Meta may not care about Australian news but it’s the soul of our communities - Virginia Haussegger https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/mar/10/meta-may-not-care-about-australian-news-but-its-the-soul-of-our-communities

pmoeser,
@pmoeser@aus.social avatar

@bhalla @timrichards Why a levy? It would be an arbitrary value someone makes up and clearly meta won’t agree with that.
Those web services companies know exactly how long an ad is looked at or clicked and so a share of any ad revenue from that post can easily be calculated and paid in commission to the publisher of the article.
If they tell you they can’t they are lying

"Australia simply does not need warships in the numbers required to support continuous build programs in one state, let alone two. Nor does it make economic sense: there are much better ways to stimulate the economy and create secure long-term jobs than building warships we do not need."

The establishment of "a national passenger rail operator" is a necessary first step in improving interstate train travel in this country

pmoeser,

@luciedigitalni @tml Not that I believe high speed rail should have one, but surely it’s a better business case study to build the line between ports with the most frequent travellers?
Sydney to Canberra will be empty because it’s mostly politians and public servants on it. They’ll fly because it’s faster.
Sydney Newcastle or Sydney Wollongong surely.

Speaking of essential reading, this from @gruber https://daringfireball.net/2024/01/coming_to_grips_with_apples_seemingly_unshakable_sense_of_app_store_entitlement and this link roundup from @mjtsai https://mjtsai.com/blog/2024/01/18/storekit-purchase-link-entitlement-for-united-states/ are also must-reads. I cannot believe Apple is going to charge a 27% tax so developers can link to their homepage. I’m generally pretty meh on a lot of tech regulation if only b/c I think most government officials are idiots and it often doesn’t actually work. But this sort of move should be illegal. Full stop. It isn’t. But it should be.

pmoeser,
@pmoeser@aus.social avatar

@film_girl @gruber @mjtsai
I’m not picking a fight, just another perspective.

The 12-27% is the ‘fee’ to have a ‘shop’ in ‘their mall’ and access to one billion devices.

That does have a lot of value.

I also agree it is a very loose analogy.

But it all hangs on Apple’s definition of what an iOS device is.

They clearly* believe it to be a console and not a general computing device.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo don’t get dragged for doing exactly the same thing on their consoles.

*By “clearly”, I mean that this is the best way for Apple to make money.

Ever cook bacon?

Use sous vide to:

  • Prep entire packages of bacon (in the package)
  • Easily pour off all the grease (into your oil jar)
  • Save the bacon until you need it

This method takes all the mess/splatter out of cooking bacon, much faster cook time.

After 50+ years on Australia's ABC TV, Dr Who moves to Disney. I am one of many who is sad about that. I don't have a subscription to Disney. I may have to invite myself over to someone's place who has got a subscription.

@timrichards @iskandarv It is an interesting idea, but unless the apartments will be sold at prices people on the median wage can reasonably afford it will do nothing to solve the housing crisis.
It will create more stock of expensive apartments in prime locations that investors will buy and rent out at the existing high rates though.

I am mystified by this #AppleEvent timing.

  • Middle of the night for EU folks, others
  • 8p for folks on the east coast, time for winding down, relaxing, not work focus

AND:

  • Timed to line up with Monday Night Football! 🏈

My hope is that Apple rolls out a logical reason for this timing. I can think of none.
