Do any of my lovely followers happen to know the Cevennes area of France ?

Seems that I started a small debate with @th. I started with the statement "The drop spindle is the only hand tool you don't hold to operate"

@th has countered with the fence post hammer. I contend that this is held in operation.

So, Fediverse, a) can you think of any other HAND tools that you do not hold the tool to operate.

and b) do you think the fence post hammer counts for this ?

Just how much of an arsehole do you have to be to park here? A beautiful medieval town centre, one end of this road has bollards blocking it (the other end may do too). It's clearly a fußgangerzone, but there are no signs saying no parking. Cos no reasonable person would think this is a suitable place to discard their vehicle.

What is the German for "you park like an arsehole" ? I want to write it on the bonnet in brake fluid. (May contain traces of joke in that last sentence)

@jon Do you no if mopla works if you don't have a German address? My attempts to sign up do not like my Dutch postcode for some reason.

Talking with a friend about burning man, they mention that someone has died there. This got me thinking, given 80k people in one place is essentially a small city. How many people die in a given city each day?

City scale data is not easy to find. But google tells me 7974 people die in .US each day. Wikipedia tells me that there are 331,449,281 people in the US. Giving the chance of death as 0.000024%.

1 death in 80k is 0.00001%.

Burning man is safer than the US in General...

This post has been bugging me for a while. Not for the text about Mastodon, but the screen cap of the wires article.

"Enough to build a town square on".

I read this. Over and over. And I wonder if anyone in tech, anyone who talks about an online town square. Have ever actually visited a town square. Sure we may have the picture in our head of the piazza of some Italian town, with terracotta roofs, and cafes in the lower story of every building. 1/n

The carbon footprint of commuting is largely based on that of your transport. I cycle to work. I'd be very surprised if that is anything close to 1g/km. Vs 100+g/km for many a Dino burner.

Sure there's many arguements to be made about flexible working, work from home, etc... but what this article is really saying, is our transport system is utterly fucked up (and about 25% of global emissions). Ban cars.

Tonight my friend said it was my turn to buy the wine. I went to the supermarket and got smacked in the face by option paralysis.

My friend gave me some key words to look for.

In the end we got two bottles. One for a fiver and one for €9. So far we've opened the cheap one and it's entirely drinkable.

Mission accomplished.

Wtf filesystem does android use underneath everything? Deleting a 4GB file causes my phone to basically stall and become unusable for a few minutes. Which shouldn't happen from just unlinking a file. Deleting a file in most filesystems is an incredibly cheap operation.

"don't use ifconfig, use ip instead"
"don't use iptables, is nftables instead"
"don't use brctl, use bridge command instead"
"don't use the route command, use ip instead"

That's cool, but is there any documentation other than a man page for any of these ? The number of blog and forum posts for using brctl are multiple orders of magnitude greater than using bridge. And worse bridge as a command is utterly shit to Google for.

Documentation of Linux has gone down hill a lot in recent years.

Imagine if trains were so frequent you could say "oh this train is really busy, I'll wait 15 mins and take the next one" all because the train service was so frequent you never needed to worry about a time table. There were no advance tickets, so you didn't have to stress about catching that one train you booked. Just walk onto the platform and get on the first train to your destination that met your balance of arrival time and busyness.

Went to a Norwegian website. Expecting it to be in Norwegian. Except it's in Dutch. But weird Dutch... It took me two paragraphs of unintelligible Dutch before I realised it's actually Deutsch. My language centres are utterly fucked right now. This week is going to make it worse. I'm at an event for an organisation I'm in. The organisation's operating language is German. But there's people from all over Europe here. General policy is pick a language and hope...

Last Christmas I received this drill as an Xmas present. It's great, chews through walls like they aren't even there. But it creates a lot of dust which is a faff, and means I'm less likely to use it. In the Autumn I bought the vacuum attachment for it. Today I used it properly for the first time.

It's amazing. Absolutely no mess. And also doubles as a depth stop, which prevents me going all the way through the wall (which is very easy to do otherwise).

Absolutely brilliant.
