May month is in the books: 510km and 10630m of EG including the Rennsteiglauf 74km race last weekend. Happy and satisfied how the race and the month turned out.

Realized that I passed 2500km and 55000m of EG for the year.

Really glad how EG is evolving. 🏔️🐐

As in many other areas in Europe, it was really pouring down here in the mountains today and I wasn't sure if I should venture out 🌧️🌧️🌧️ But in the end I took advantage of a brief rain-free slot and ran my usual 15km/600m EG

The small streams in the forest have a lot more water than normal and even my Salomon GoreTex shoes were completely wet by the end. But it was absolutely perfect for #running at around 10°C

Wet, wet, wet. At one point during the run I wanted to jump over a branch lying across the path in the woods. Unfortunately, the ground was so soggy, my left foot which was pushing me off the ground just slipped back. My right foot got tangled up in the branch. A second later I found myself lying flat on the floor. Yuck! Apart from that it was a good run. After Trump‘s conviction in NY yesterday, I skipped my audiobook and took a dive into my MSNBC podcasts.

Change of plans today. Hoped to be able to sneak out and back in before the 🌩️🌩️🌩️ and visit my favorite trail hills. But as I leave the house I see the dark clouds and make the immediate decision to stay on the neighborhood hill for some scrambling and speed hiking. In case I need to “evacuate rapidly” (don’t want to be on the trails with lightning). Managed to do 5km and 324m of EG before I saw a few⚡️not too far away. #trailrunning #running #meteorology

Elections for the EU parliament. Just deposited my vote at one of the polling stations for advanced voting (the large library at Götaplatsen in Göteborg - what a suitable place to exercise your democratic rights) as I am probably busy on the 9th of June (or can’t guarantee to go to the polling station before they close)

(Thinking extra about my friends in the UK not longer being able to join us in the election.)

ThunderHoneySnow, to ultrarunning French

Managed 40km/1100m elevation in the pouring rain and unexpectedly cold temperatures before DNFing. Absolutely nailed nutrition, hydration, plan, pace, & HR but I couldn't stay warm. Sucks but I'm not built for the cold, I was expecting warmth/heat today. I am rolling into a training block for a 50k in August and wondering if I could fit in a solo attempt at the 80km in the fall. It would be a shame to waste all this readiness.

Another terrible run, hot and with my heart rate out of control. I cut it off early in frustrated disgust. I am not myself & I can’t explain it.

My stress and sleep issues have mostly resolved and that two weeks without running shouldn’t have affected my fitness as much as it has.

And while I may not understand it, it’s clear to see. I went through the stages of grief on the walk back & am mostly landed on acceptance. Will now run slower & target zone 2, rebuilding my vanished base.

At the train station starting the trip back home after #rennsteiglauf and a nice morning walk in the sun through the higher parts of Eisenach towards Wartburg. The ICE train is arriving here in a couple of minutes according to the announcement. The app and the email still say my journey was cancelled and I should find alternative solutions. #db #bahn fun continues. 😅 #trailrunning #running

My goal was to enjoy it and experience the atmosphere of these classic and traditional trail race. If everything went good I wanted to finish it below 9 hours. That’s what I hoped for. Didn’t plan for 8 hours. 😳🙈

What a race. After only having it done once I can really recommend it. What a beautiful route. While it is not technical, the constant change in elevation of the undulating course makes it “hard”. As well as it is almost too runable. 🫣😜 Only had 45 minutes of uphill speed hiking or leaving aid stations speed hiking while drinking/eating.

Managed to have even splits for the first and second half. Happy about that.

I am really happy that I focused my training a lot on “rolling hills” and lots of EG, which in Göteborg means lots of change (up and down) in elevation. Undulating like here. 👊

Rennsteiglauf checked in an md settled: arrived in Eisenach, got my bib number, did a shakeout run on the first few kilometers of the race course (uphill 9% right away 500m after the start in the town center), went to the dumpling party.

Taper 1. T-5d. Rennsteiglauf in Germany. 74km with 1874m of EG and 1386m of EL. A “classic” in Germany. 51st edition. With up to 2500 participants (and 15000 in total over all events). Taking place in the “Thüringer Wald” Mittelgebirge (most known is Oberhof for its Biathlon events during the winter). Will be cool. Though it is kind of my A-goal race I am planning to do the race to be able to enjoy it as much as possible while also racing. It is a huge festival in the area. And I don’t want to miss out the party feeling at the aid stations. Zoom in at the screenshot. Amazing number and supply. T-4d. Rennsteiglauf (74km/1884m of EG) trivia. Aid stations serve porridge. It is actually quite famous for this. With regards to the aid stations, I guess I will run with only one flask. And only use it at the beginning to avoid the crowds at the first station after 6.9km and then don't refill it. There are 14 aid stations. The longest distance between them being 6.7km, the shortest 2.6. They are served by local sports clubs from the villages nearby. One of the largest HM in the world happened today in Göteborg. My new employer sponsors runners 👊 (signup fee, tent in the starting area with drinks, bbq, etc). Though I have my main ultra race next week I participated and took it as a training run (easy tempo pace without pushing it, definitely not race pace ). My start was at 1345 with over 30C in the sun (26C regular). 🥵😎. It was a fun event. More than 200000 spectators along the course. (Haven’t run it since 2004 (1:19 - 20 years later 20 minutes slower 🤣)). Legs felt quite fresh after it. Ran back home 🙈 (4km). Heat was noticeable on the HR. But it didn’t had an effect on my hydration needs. Took only small sips every 5K at the aid stations. 🤷‍♂️. Good day. https://www.goteborgsvarvet.se/

@sebastianhahn @officehippy thank you both 🙏. heat usually doesn’t affect me a lot. of course, I would like to avoid it for these kind of things (10C-16C would have been much nicer). What helped me as well was to prepare me throughout the week for this. I did all my training this week when it was warm in the early afternoon in plain sun and avoided running in shadows. I also had my lunch, coffee and reading in plain sun sitting there for an hour. Both were a key to be able to adapt to the heat quite good.

@BenjaminHan always add the “Strava tax” of 0.1… the problem when your watch and Strava use different calculation models on your GPS data.

@BenjaminHan @WTL I haven’t seen this kind of discrepancy yet. I guess you would want to download the GPX file from Strava and take a look at it… (there are some apps to extract GPX info from the fitness app as well (though you might have “other means” 😜). With the different GPX files you could compare their data (it is just XML anyway) or upload them to different other sites to see what they make out of them. Gaia, GPX studio, …

Wednesday:
93 seconds of plank
11 minutes of yoga for runners
11 and 20 minutes of HIIT
20 minutes of strength training
6.2 km of (11°C, light rain, with 17km/hr wind)

Accidentally picked a 10 minute HITT when I meant a 30 minute… so I did two, both of which were hard. 🤣

My running heart rate is up (~146 this run vs ~125-130). I think it’s the workouts beforehand and not completely recovering before the run.

Light rain was nice. I don't mind getting wet. It's like free cooling.
