iWeb, Ubisoft and Red Hat alumni doing bare metal and clouds, Dev/Ops, SRE, CI/CD, release engineering and everything in between.

Open source enthusiast and contributor to projects like OpenStack, Ansible, Fedora and CentOS.

I'm concerned about privacy in the age of internet that my kids and I will grow up in.

I have opinions on things but I'd rather discuss them with you over a drink rather than on a public platform. Sorry :)

I share news, discussions and stuff I find interesting.

@jwildeboer if you posted this to reddit the first thing they'd ask you was whether it was printed with a food-safe filament (which most aren't)

@vwbusguy trained from Galaxy amongst other things with an opt out policy :(

rfc2549,
@rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

@vwbusguy @maxamillion I'm well aware of the legal aspect and I'm sure lawyers have done their job.

It doesn't take away from the fact that lots of people uploaded their stuff to galaxy in the spirit of open source. Then some years later people decided it was implied that everyone that didn't opt out agreed to have their stuff slurped into a LLM model.

I am salty about GitHub doing the same thing, even if it is legal.

It should be opt-in. Always. Like telemetry on Fedora or whatever.

rfc2549,
@rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

@vwbusguy @maxamillion my stance is nuanced and I don't want you to think I am singling out Red Hat/IBM over this, let's have a beverage of your choice and chat about it one day :)

rfc2549,
@rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

@vwbusguy @maxamillion I respect the effort to make it open source and I appreciate the difference.

What I am still salty about is it being opt out instead of opt in, even if it's legal.

We know that if it would be opt-in -- if you expressly asked projects whether they would agree to be included, the volume of data would not be the same.

I mentioned telemetry as an example, it has the same "issue": given the choice, people would rather not being tracked.

It can be legal, though ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@vwbusguy @maxamillion do you know if it'll be recorded ? I'd love to to watch.

Friends of Mastodon, or ?
Why ?

I am aware of the difference between the two and why Forgejo exists but I'm interested in your opinion.

Thanks !

Where are you registering your domain names nowadays ?

I just need the registration. WHOIS privacy and the ability to point nameservers elsewhere.

No fancy features.

    I've been using this picture to explain what I've been doing in terms of work recently -- with some amount of success.

    In other words: upgrading clusters in-place with little to no downtime, migrating workloads from old, under-spec'd machines to updated and upgraded ones.

    Do you have a picture that's a better fit ? :)

    I see toots in a mixture of english, french, spanish, dutch, irish and german (amongst others) and I don't mind.

    I don't understand it all and it is not an issue for me if you toot in your native language or otherwise.

    My native language is french but, perhaps ironically, I tend to write in english in an attempt to be inclusive to a wider audience.

    The tech industry has largely settled on english as a base and there isn't much I can do about that.

    Can't people just be nice to each other ?

    I don't typically chat about work on Mastodon but I'm starting a new job tomorrow and it's not a prestigious or glamorous role in a huge tech company.

    Instead, I'm excited to use and share my experience with a local hosting company to set them on the right track with the right tools, processes and infrastructure.

    I'll also get to do some open source in the lands of OpenStack and Ansible once again !

    No more Azure, thank you.

    Today is the last day before the API lockdown on begins.

    Third party apps are being shut down and just like Twitter, I'm out.

    The internet is not like it used to be 20 years ago. Too bad.

    The explosion of Freenode gave momentum for Matrix to grow.

    The acquisition of Twitter and the exodus to Mastodon quickly put it in the spotlight.

    With the enshittification of Reddit, we can expect it to be a boon for kbin and lemmy.

    History will tell how it turns out.
