I bought an HP printer last year. Now they have this "instant ink" thing, where you have special ink cartridges that phone home so they know how many pages you print and when you're low. You pay a monthly fee and they send you more ink when you start to run low.

It sounds awful to me, but they gave me 6 months free with like 700 pages a month included in that. Why the heck not?

When that ran out I went on the 10-page per month plan for $1 a month. Since I don't print much, that seemed ok.

@bit101 printers are such a scam. In the UK we keep legislating to stop them but it appears to have no teeth. We bought the last of an older (Epson) model that allows 3rd party ink, and have vowed to never update the firmware. Wasn't there a YouTube about a printer that had a sticker hiding its usb port?!- maybe look at yours, you might be lucky!

@zeh @bit101 nice! But our printer is 95% colour images for craft work by my wife, and 5% Amazon return labels 😂- so unfortunately colour is required 😁

Thinking through the idea of Facebook in the fediverse, this is a company that strives to deliver Disneyland on the internet.

Who cares if a node blocks them, what's really going to bake your noodle is when they run access to the fediverse like Apple manages their App Store.

And that is how it's going to work.

They're also going to implement Facebook-only APIs, and you're going to want to support them, because they give you access to many millions of people.

@Chigaze @davew this this this! - I want a few hundred like-minded, intellectually challenging and occasionally freakazoid humans, not "access to millions". self-curation is hard and time-consuming, but is SO much more satisfying than the grift of mere follower numbers. For others on a more commercial footing, fine for you, but as a genuine "social" network, no Meta for me, thanks

Current Status:
re-designing from first principles how best to get RGB images from a raw file 😅

  • Actually quite interesting to figure out a balance between colour resolution and sharpness/detail. I think a lot of the algos used by photo manufacturers are proprietary anyway

@hamoid @WeavingWithAI ha yeah. ControlNet in Stable Diffusion has a "shuffle" model which is really interesting- it can reimagine your originals with different compositions but still retain relevant themes and palettes

doom eternal: they went deeper on platforming elements, added simple environment puzzles, and complicated the pinata rules for ammo/armor/health retrieval - basically, you need a different pinata stick depending on what you need: melee finisher = health; flamethrower = armor; chainsaw = ammo. the latter two are like "smart bombs", so of limited supply. there's five kinds of smart bomb moves you can activate. a dizzying number of choices. the graphics already no longer hold up to 2023 standards.

Having gone onto FB to research groups interested in my new/old hobby of astrophotography, I was amazed (and disgusted) by the sheer number of ads interspersed in my feed. Mastodon has maybe spoiled me, but I can't be doing with wading through that any more. I'll just muddle through on my own I guess 😬😁

@jeffpalmer I'd actually like to see the opposite - where they're fleeing from imminent death, but they pause, reach for the helmet and put it on. That's not what I'd do at that point, but I guess they do it in films for legal reasons

Lost Harley the cat this morning.

We've had him spread out on a towel downstairs the past couple of hours, took turns telling stories about him, the usual wake stuff, you know.

Kid's been watching over him while I do the work outside. Mad respect to sextons, it's hard bloody work.

Had to come in and do the grim job of measuring him, now having a quick cup of tea before I go back out and widen his grave a bit. Well, a lot really.
