The phrase “AI” has been poisoned so hard that nobody building serious products should use it. I would love to see more free software projects leverage computer vision or natural language processing for example, but I would never describe those as “AI” because it’s a brand destroying phrase at this point
@danirabbit No joke. At this point, most #marketing copy using the terms "AI" or "artificial intelligence" really just means "uses computer."
For real, my security camera is not using #AI to find humans in the frame. That's basic #ImageProcessing that's been around for years. My #DSLR could accurately fimd and focus on faces a decade ago. That certainly was not #ArtificialIntelligence!
This evening, I added support for the SGI image format embedded inside QuickTime containers to my QuickDraw viewer. Turns out SGI images have a 512 byte headers which QuickTime strips, as the data is redundant with what is stored by QuickTime. So before rendering, the full SGI file needs to be reconstructed.
Here’s a clear example of how aggressive the image processing has become on newer iPhones. This is a comparison between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, taking photos of distant text at equal magnification. Note how the 15 Pro Max’s image pipeline has made up all the details.
EDIT: I’m going to drop mentions of “AI” and “hallucinating” here because I think it’s conjuring up the wrong mental models in readers’ heads. What’s likely happening is over-eager noise reduction and sharpening (which may or may not have pattern matching) creating details where none exist. Every phone does some amount of NR and sharpening, but later iPhones are super aggressive in this regard, so much so that the results often depart from what we accept as “reality”.
It's #ReleaseFriday 🚀 — This round has lots of progress and additions to the recently announced https://thi.ng/imago package for declarative image compositing and (nestable) transformations. It already supports 5 layer types (incl. SVG & dynamic text overlays), 12 transform operators and 9 output file formats, output path formatters/params. I've started adding more API docs and examples to the readme (both JSON & API) to give a better impression of what's possible & how to use it. The main use case for now is asset preparation for the static site generator of the next thi.ng website, but it's already far more expressive than that...

Are you a life scientist working with microscopy images?
Do you feel like you could use a nudge in the right direction in order to dive into quantitative image analysis ?
Want to learn to program in ImageJ macro language, use novel deep learning tools, discover best practices in image processing all while working on your own data?
The program will focus on hands-on work using the best open source tools available to the BioImage Analysis community.
#I2K (From Images to Knowledge), the conference where bioimage methods research meets research software engineering meets biology, will welcome you at #HumanTechnopole in Milan from Oct. 23rd to 25th, 2024.
Anybody out there looking for an ML or software engineer with >30 years total experience and ~20 years in the industry?
I have extensive experience with #Python and #ML frameworks, particularly #TensorFlow, and I've worked on #NLP and #ImageProcessing both in the workplace and in personal open source projects. My resume is available here:
Getting the #UX right was probably the most time consuming aspect here. The #imageprocessing steps are now clearly separated in the #UI. Results may not be artistically perfect #pixelart, but definitely good enough as a starting point for finishing touches. I expect this to save some time in #gamedev / #gamejams, for example. #foss#tool #
#Janelia is offering a 12-day bootcamp designed to demonstrate how biological queries and hypotheses steer experimental designs on various #microscopy platforms and across length scales from molecules to small animals:

re-designing from first principles how best to get RGB images from a raw file 😅
Actually quite interesting to figure out a balance between colour resolution and sharpness/detail. I think a lot of the algos used by photo manufacturers are proprietary anyway
