New: Elon Musk’s X is throttling traffic to news websites and competitors he dislikes. Five-second delays on links to New York Times, Reuters, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky and Substack. Most other sites we tested have zero delay https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/08/15/twitter-x-links-delayed/ @jeremybmerrill

riley,

@drewharwell @jeremybmerrill
why is this news

does seem to have a much clearer association between people and objects, although it doesn't in any real sense understand physics.

The problem will continue to be how to train a model that has no physical presence in the world how to have a concept of just the basics of how things function.

Embodiment is a real issue.

riley,

@echevarian420 LOVE this one

is it true some instances block ones that dont follow some global block list? feels counter intuitive to the reason i use social media. you should want to see differing opinions, no?

I see a bunch of people are demanding a "pause" in AI development and deployment

Ethically speaking, not wrong

But that assumes the people running the firms developing these tools have any notion of what's right and wrong, and understand the dangers of what they're doing

My impression is they don't, and political decision makers are too weak and in thrall to Silicon Valley

So chances a pause happens? Close to zero, I'd wager

riley,

@jon are you implying people who work in tech have no morality? lmfao - its the guys in charge, not the joe who sits in front of his screen for hours debugging, who lack morality.

Sometimes criminals close the door when plotting crimes.

“We should ban doors!” 🚫🚪

Sometimes criminals hide weapons under their clothes.

“We should ban clothes!” 🚫👖

🙃

Do not fall for these misguided arguments.

Most of the time people use end-to-end encrypted apps to talk about the most mundane things.

Sometimes vulnerable people use end-to-end encryption to protect themselves and stay safe.

We should keep and cherish encryption.

We should demand it everywhere.

End-to-end encryption protects our human right to privacy and safety.

We must fight for it! ✊🔒

riley,

@Em0nM4stodon good argument for guns too lol

riley,

@Em0nM4stodon i agree no one has the right to kill. but you do have the fundamental right to protect yourself, with guns

Should I migrate this account (@atomicpoet) to https://calckey.social?

riley,

@atomicpoet is there anything specific about that instance that's better than mastodon.social? the web interface does look neat.

riley,

@atomicpoet lots of neat features. thanks!

riley,

@atomicpoet circling back on this does calckey have cool inside jokes or is it the same as other mastodon instances in that its just facebook / linkedin lmao
