#iran helicopter incident is another #news event that is easily followed just using #mastodon. The “translate” option is wonderful for this purpose, as a lot of people currently commenting are from EU so there is lots of DE and ES talk.
Fifth month of using #ubuntu#linux for my daily work driver which includes lots of #msoffice work as well as plugging into several different types of usb-a and usb-c hubs in office spaces, connecting displays, webcams and mics. It all just works. Except for that one #displaylink screen which required me to install a driver from a download site.
I remember toying with Red Hat 5 circa 1998. #FOSS truly has come a long way.
Won my second run yesterday in Slay the Spire. I really enjoy the game and I'm learning a lot about deckbuilders at the same time. It gives me plenty ideas for my own deckbuilding game.
Waiting for this government site page to load... it's giving me time to think deeper about the mysteries of the universe. Painful to do useful work today. How did I survive the PSTN with a dial-up modem connection? Ugh 😤
@nixCraft surely you didn't forget the fact you needed to "connect" before beginning a download. 56k dialup still took >30 seconds to connect. we were so patient :)
As much as #Linux#Gaming has improved over the years, native Linux gaming really hasn’t improved a whole lot. I still find myself having to force a native game to use #Proton quite frequently when I play on #SteamDeck#VideoGames
@paulthenerd some games (like euro truck simulator 2) which offer native windows and linux clients actually perform (drastically!) better on steam deck when using proton with the windows binary. most devs don't have time to do deep optimization for multiple platforms. makes more sense to ensure proton compatibility and forget about linux native
as video games take more and more digital storage space, i'm increasingly more fascinated & interested in some of those that don't. not for a lack of complexity or anything either, but a different approach and focus.
i like these compact, dense video games that do a lot with a little. I think much of it simply comes from my appreciation of older games in general, which had no choice but to maximize the use of their modest resources.
the new #beatles track sounds like there are about 12 band members playing the song at the same time. i prefer the more sparse production of their sixties/seventies work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW55J2zE3N4
@popey it’s hidden from users quite well which is why it didn’t strike me first. But while researching a Libre Office issue (TTF fonts not displaying all variations) I noticed that apparently it matters if LO is installed as snap or as deb. Which means now it becomes an additional issue for end users simply trying to get stuff to work. More parameters and configuration options = more issues. I noticed some guides actually recommending uninstall the snap and install from apt.
@edafe thanks, I actually like Ubuntu as simple and quite elegant “just works” solution, now started actively using it as primary OS for my work machine. It just struck me that the snap/apt thing is weird as they essentially do the same thing. I do notice they tried hard to hide the layer from users in the “software” app but it is still a pain to consider yet another variable when troubleshooting issues.
@popey install Bahnschrift TTF font using the stock Font app on vanilla Ubuntu, (it is not in ms-corefonts) confirm new font is installed (the fonts app gets stuck on “installing” but it does show up after an app restart including all variations like “semi condensed”. Now start Libreoffice and try to use one of the variations, notice how they aren’t available. Some Google results point to rebuilding font cache which has no effect. This is when I learnt about Snap and Apt sources.
Everything about the Andreessen “manifesto” that’s doing the rounds is awful, but the worst thing about it is that it is boring. Andreessen just repackaged the capitalist status quo, of which he is most decidedly a member of the ruling class, as a series of “revolutionary” affirmations.
This is the Live Laugh Love of the capitalist boyboss.
