Ready for The Talk Show 🙏

Great show, appreciate the sideloading question @gruber!

Surprising news, Delta was approved for TestFlight 🥳

If you’re at and want to emulate old Nintendo games without any sideloading BS, come find Shane or I and we’ll give you a Delta sticker with the secret TestFlight invite link!

(We’ll see how long it lasts…)

Good news: AltStore + Delta work totally fine on iOS 17 🙏

Bad news: looks like macOS Sonoma might finally remove support for legacy Mail.app plug-ins that I use to install AltStore in the first place 🫠

rileytestut,
@rileytestut@mastodon.social avatar

They’ve been warning legacy Mail plug-ins would eventually stop working for a few years now so it’s not a surprise…it just gives me another challenge during my already-busy summer 😅

Swift interop with C++ is another gift of the gods.

C++ is not going away, but we really need to start moving to safe languages and try to not write code that can easily be exploited.

A mountain of hard work to help the world transition to safe languages.

@rileytestut@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza I’m beyond excited for this! The only ObjC in Delta is the translation layer between Swift and the various C++ emulator cores, now I can finally remove that 🙏

If I could pick just one feature for Apple to add in iOS 17, it would be a system-wide clipboard history. (Or APIs that would allow third-party apps to implement a system-wide clipboard history, but I think sandboxing would make that impossible. Probably has to be an OS feature.)

rileytestut,
@rileytestut@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber that’s why I made a clipboard manager for AltStore! It’s possible to work around sandbox restrictions with some creativity (but of course wouldn’t pass app review)

I get a jolt of dopamine whenever I mark an article as clickbait in Artifact, such a great feature. Can’t believe it took this long for a company to actually tackle clickbait head-on https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/2/23745927/artifact-fix-clickbait-headlines-rewriting-ai

What are the odds this xrOS/Reality Pro stuff allows non App Store software installation? To me seems hard to justify a lockdown on a $3k "Pro" product.

rileytestut,
@rileytestut@mastodon.social avatar

@paul 0%, there’s no reason they’d give up control if they don’t have to

(I wish they would tho)

Someone needs to add this ActivityPub plugin to Swift Forums immediately! Following Swift Evolution from Ivory would be absolutely incredible https://meta.discourse.org/t/activitypub-plugin/266794

Got off my call with Reddit just now about the API. Bad news unless I come up with 20 million dollars (not joking). Appreciate boosts. https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/

@christianselig JFC that’s awful, really hope they change their minds 😞

Lots of comments recently on my channel from people immediately NOPEing on an app with a subscription.

I'm starting to feel like the App Store wrecked people's expectations for what software they can use with basically zero cost. When everything was like $1-5, you could buy every single cool app that people talked about, and not really feel the pain.

Downside is companies could not sustain themselves on that little revenue, so many didn't make it.

rileytestut,
@rileytestut@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @matt it’s a shame Apple doesn’t allow developers to charge for TestFlight access though. Right now my apps are free but I provide paid access to beta versions via Patreon, but if my apps were in the App Store I’d have to lock “normal” features behind a paywall instead (which is understandably annoying)

Looks like OpenAI has solved its business model problem.

What college student isn't going to pay $20/mo for this?
