@tivasyk@chocolatefossty the flagship instance of lemmy (.ml) is very pro-Russian, and I moved away from it when I started noticing people talking about "Ukrainian invasion" and seeing comments criticizing Russia being heavily downvoted. luckily, as with every part of the Fediverse, there's a bunch of instances to choose from. personally, I'm quite fond of Beehaw.

@havn@gracjan@fishcharlie@christianselig@realcaseyrollins their primary, originally only, instnace is lemmy.ml they chose that domain specifically to represent Marxist-Leninism, so this isn't me just claiming they are Marxists, this is them claiming they are Marxists. I am a libertarian socialist, so I have nothing against leftism. I suspect the earlier was "Everyone I don't like are Nazis."
@nf3xn@fishcharlie I 100% acknowledge this problem. Currently the landscape on Lemmy is small and weird to say the least (and I haven’t used it yet for these reasons), but it might change if more normal people start creating their own servers.
The point of reddit is that it's one place, where you go to /r/anime for all anime discussions, /r/kpop for kpop, etc... Once you have dozens of instances, each with their own sub-communities... things get way more out-of-control in terms of discoverability and centralization (which is what you kinda want with Reddit, in my use-case at least)
@falcon@fishcharlie@nf3xn You can have everything in one place. You can be on one instance and follow communities from another instance. It works similarly to Mastodon in this way.
1 - No. If you have 10 anime communities, you end up with 10 threads for discussing each weekly episode, not one.
2 - If it works similarly to Mastodon, does that mean there's also the problem where I might not see replies on a thread, like happens on Mastodon? Because if yes, it also misses the point of having a discussion thread if I can't read all replies (apart from private/blocked ones, of course)...
@falcon@gracjan@nf3xn Sounds like you want the benefits of centralization in a decentralized system. However, I’d push back on the first point a bit. There is nothing stopping someone from creating r/anime and r/animeofficial. However, I question if these are truly big enough issues to stifle usage once it matures. Once you get enough federation, it feels like the real world impacts of these issues are minimal or nonexistent.

I don't. I never suggested a de-centralized alternative to Reddit. In fact, I was advocating that something decentralized would NOT be a replacement for Reddit exactly because it is decentralized.

There's nothing, and it happens with new TV shows - Example, From (Paramount+). But when this happens, one of the communities ends up being the bigger one, and, since it's centralized, you know easily which one is bigger or more active. Which you wouldn't know in a decentralized environment, since your instance might not know about some other instance
@falcon@gracjan@nf3xn That’s what I’m saying. With enough federation that isn’t an issue. Sure, without federation it’s an issue. But with enough federation it is not an issue.
Crazy how this was 6 days ago, and how it's blown up.
Only problem is that I feel it hasn't blown up enough. This is a serious issue that I legit believe could set serious precedence for how future companies set their pricing on their API, and how it bodes for future third party apps.
I'm personally invested in this; I use Apollo a LOT (over half of my reddit consumption is through the app), and I'm definitely hoping for the best. Hopefully this reddit blackout works.
@christianselig Sounds like they are trying to kill off 3rd party apps in order to have full control over their users exclusively via their own app. That sucks. I don't use Apple anymore but when I did I used Apollo and it's a top quality Reddit client. Hope you're able to develop another app/income stream.
@christianselig I’ve been reading through your conversations with admins on Reddit, and is it just me or are they really dogging on Apollo? Like, even if they’re right, they’re offering no help to resolve it, and just singling out Apollo, saying it’s inefficient. What do they have against Apollo?
@christianselig is there any sense that the nature of the API use matters? I mean, Apollo adds value to Reddit while other uses of the API may be extractive.
@christianselig This is an absolute same Christian and truly breaks my heart! I have loved Apollo for so long. I’ll be leaving Reddit for sure if this doesn’t change.

@christianselig yikes!! How many Apollo users are there? If you were to invest that amount of money, you might as well ask VCs to help you in starting your own social network lol. Everyone else seems to be doing it, so why not? :)
@christianselig Quite unfortunate to see! If there is perhaps a 'silver' 'lining' to this situation, it means I (and others like me) will probably be able to curb my Reddit addiction. Thanks, Reddit? (I say in a "Thanks Obama" sort of way)
@christianselig truth is, all of these social media platforms cost money to run. How much API access should cost is arguable ($20M feels steep), but not free.
Such a shame, whilst I didn't use Apollo, I am using RIF and they will also close the app. However, as many have already said, it will get us off our Reddit addiction!
@christianselig and as soon as they force Apollo off reddit, I'm off reddit. Apollo is great software and I hope you can use it as a framework for something new. I'll be watching...
@christianselig And this is how people end up on Mastodon. While I didn't mind the Twitter changes because I barely ever used it, the latest Reddit announcement made me finally get on here.
