I’m reading Elamin’s “Son of Elsewhere.” I’ve been pretty sparing with what bound books I spend time reading. I’ve loved Elamin for a long time and his book is wild. The journey of his writing is beautiful.

“If you look like me, here is something you understand internally, before you’re ever told: in America, when presidents need to look like they’re doing something, they take it out on Brown and Black bodies … We are the canvas of brutality.”

One of the things that has fallen to the way side with the past few years is the idea of brand loyalty. Yes for certain items I have a preference (I’ve had some clothing etc for 5-10+ yrs) in terms of durability and quality but beside that? Fuck no. Price. Patagonia? Nope. Canadian brands? Not really. If it’s not on sale then won’t even bother. I have mostly had the same clothes for the past five years, repairing them, maintaining, which I’ve always done but now with earnest

@stephanie @ShaunOttawa @grivettcarnac ooooh we’re doing this today?! I just swapped out my 40+ wardrobe for my 36/38 wardrobe in April, feels impossible to stay a consistent weight for more than 3-4 years.

    @WTL @grivettcarnac all this is doing is making me picture replacing both sides of the canal’s roads with wide paths, picturing something like the main strip of Prince’s Island Park in Calgary (grew up there so that’s my reference), make it a livable place meant to be accessible to emergency vehicles if needed but no regular people cars.

    Got the apple tree trimmed. Later in the season that optimal. One or two buds are even starting to open (!) Drat.

    Also trimmed a few other still dormant shrubs and then moved on to swapping the dying battery from the SO's car for a new one.

    Rain starting just as I wrapped up.

    @ottaross my mom gets pretty regular migraines around the same time as I did (back when we lived in the same place), I only ever got one I’d consider that bad. A migraine makes you wonder if you’ll ever be ok again, hope yours feels better soon!

    After a while, has fixed the settings on the Fibe Gigahub residential modem's admin page, so that now it's possible to entirely turn off all 3 WiFi bands. This was broken a while ago.

    This is important for those who only want the Bell-controlled device to be used as a fiber modem, with no control or insight into the WiFi signals in the home, and no control over firewall and routing.

    UI version is showing 7.3.28, firmware 1.19.6.

    robattrell,
    @robattrell@mastodon.social avatar

    @johnefrancis is there a separate setting to put it in bridge mode? We’re on our third in as many years and we still have all kinds of issues. I’d love to get some mesh devices and replace this network with my own.

    Thinking about this article on how to fix one of Ottawa’s worst stroads, Carling Ave, while taking the 85 along Carling to Britannia.

    It doesn’t have to be an unpleasant stroad.

    What would you do to fix Carling?

    Last night, we watched The Marvels (Apple VOD), and it was just as fun as when we saw it in theatre.

    We watched some of the extras, and I’ll probably do the director’s commentary later. I know it didn’t do well at the box office, but it’s absolutely worth a watch, in my opinion.

    I think the best part of it was the kindness the characters showed each other.

    robattrell,

    @WTL waiting for D+ over here. I’ve been living 4-5 months behind since Marvel started making movies again. Very excited to see it though! The show times at theatres do not work for a parent with young kids to see movies when their kids go to bed (unless they want to be out past midnight 😂).

    "It's a horrible thing to happen first thing in the morning, and to someone so young as well."

    If only it had been someone in their 40s, mid-afternoon, it would have gotten much less attention and we could all get on with our days more quickly.

    @mariellequinton @johnefrancis @WTL I know nothing about snowblowers (or engines for that matter). We got one as a housewarming gift, if I try to start it and it doesn’t run, I wait 15 minutes and try again. I really want an electric one when this one dies because I don’t know how to maintain it, change oil, anything other than put it more gas. It does the job though, I will say that. The waste water data has been updated and there is evidence that many of us are infected and spreading a long term disabling disease. Take precautions. There is no such thing as a mild case of - don't kid yourself.

    Flu data is also about as bad as it gets.

    robattrell,
    @robattrell@mastodon.social avatar

    @human3500 at least rsv actually seems lower than last year. We’re trying to find positives, right?

    robattrell,
    @robattrell@mastodon.social avatar

    @human3500 I do continually wonder if there’s any way to place those numbers on the same relative scale. Presumably each virus has a relative %infected estimate corresponding to levels in wastewater. Even if it was approximate it would put things in context. Maybe they are doing that and the raw numbers really are just WAY higher for Covid. In the end it doesn’t really matter a ton because it’s all bad.

    robattrell,
    @robattrell@mastodon.social avatar

    @jeffgilchrist @human3500 so in theory, the current consistently rising levels could be a relatively constant number of currently infected individuals getting a variant strain that causes them to shed more?

    That seems like our best possible way to estimate infection rates in the current environment is still a wildly imperfect way to monitor risk. We kind of have to operate under the assumption that, on average, things can be compared directly if you unfocus your eyes a little 🫠, right?

    robattrell,
    @robattrell@mastodon.social avatar

    @jeffgilchrist @human3500 if there’s one thing I’ve learned from public health the last few years, we definitely shouldn’t blame it on increasing case counts 😂 anything but that.

    Likely good news for Microsoft-keyboard fans: Incase is taking over the business instead of letting MS kill it. https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/5/24026323/microsoft-incase-partnership-keyboards-accessories-partnership

    “A new ergonomic keyboard that’s very exciting” is apparently on the way, too.

    It's even a good sign that this image depicting my favorite (badly Photoshopped) Sculpt Ergo keyboard was apparently supplied by Incase, suggesting that they'll be making more of them as well.

    robattrell,
    @robattrell@mastodon.social avatar

    @marcoarment this is very exciting news indeed! I didn’t care at all about keyboard until I found that one and now all I want is more like it. Separate numpad, ergonomic layout, reverse tilt, it’s hard to find any of these features in a mainstream keyboard, much less all of them.

    @Cassandra @grivettcarnac @Dianora how much would the city save if they didn’t have fare checking, fare gates, fare scanners, ticket boxes, pass infrastructure, station barriers. Imagine if it was as free as the street.
