After several years of using the Line 1 Virtual Audio Cable, I'm fed up with the delay and crackling sound that occur when a process consumes a lot of system resources or every time I perform an action or connect another device to my laptop.
The 30-millisecond delay may seem minor, but it can be noticeable when I'm trying to redirect audio quickly to another device. I'm looking for alternatives to VAC because this delay and the crackling are affecting my experience.
I've searched online, but I'm hoping someone can suggest a better and accessible solution that serves a similar purpose.
I'm mainly using Virtual Audio Cable to apply effects to my microphone through Reaper and then redirect audio (like movies or music) to listen with friends. Sometimes, when I want to stream a game or do similar tasks, the 30-millisecond delay becomes a problem. I haven't been able to achieve better results with the audio repeater included with the app.
That's why I'm looking for something better. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

@Caoimhe Voicemeeter Standard offers two physical inputs and one virtual input. Voicemeeter Banana offers three physical inputs and two virtual ones. Voicemeeter Potato offers five physical inputs and three virtual ones.
I recommended Potato purely because it's the one I settled on for my streaming rig, so it's the one I recalled from memory.

Woke up my work computer by tapping the calculator shortcut button on my keyboard. The calculator was front and center when I logged in. Hmmm…

Locked again and retried. Same. HMMMM…

Someone smarter than me could exploit that somehow. Not sure if it’s an issue with windows Lock Screen, the keyboard software, or the keyboard firmware, but it’s sending commands that bypass the Lock Screen. Now I’m going to be distracted by this all day.

The keyboard sends a scancode like it does for any other key. In this case, it's 0C 0192. The OS decides what to do with it, which for Calculator key and Windows OS, makes Windows consult registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey\18\ShellExecute and execute that app in the current/last-active session, and if none set it will default to %windir%\calc.exe.

True, it is not great that it launches calc even when the workstation is locked. I feel like they should have baked in a check for whether the session is locked for those app keys, while still allowing the volume control, for example.

I remember finding the behaviour of media transport keys a bit peculiar some time ago when I noticed I could pause Spotify from the lockscreen, but not Play again, and I wondered what determines which of those signals pass through. Haven't checked recently
