This is the kick-off post in a series in which I'm going to explore things that we could change about the Web. I look forward to being wrong in public a lot, hopefully in useful ways!

@fabrice I'm glad you zoomed in on that — there's literally a whole book behind that sentence :-D

robin,

@simonstl It broke while I'm away from my computer 😭

robin,

@simonstl Yes, I managed to kick it from my phone 😁

@Edent Thank you!

@smallcircles @u24 Yup, I don't have an email thing, only old fashioned feeds. I guess I could add an email if there's a way to automate it.

@giardino_punk Thank you, I hope you'll enjoy the rest!

This is a test of gobo.social, which can cross-post on Bluesky and Mastodon (and others):

Go read my https://berjon.com/internet-transition/, it's good for you!

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@ultrazool @PenguinJunk I think it has to start with identifying the domains where we can establish commons that readily beat extractive alternatives. Solidify those, use the margins to take over the next one.

Should American English just give up and refer to organizations with plural pronouns like everyone else, and like Americans do verbally anyway?

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@ntnsndr Why stop there? 😇

OMG I am so sick of bouncing back and forth between Mastodon and Bluesky, can we please just integrate them now?

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@twaring @ntnsndr AP isn't necessarily the most wonderful spec, it's a protocol built by document people. Mimicking the email model is arguably not the best idea. The Bluesky arch is to take the components of a unified social network and split them apart so they can be operated separately, then enable federation & alternative provision for each.

Without touching debates on other relative merits, there are very legitimate reasons why you'd want to try something other than AP.

@tiago @academicchatter Bluesky feeds are also used a lot for academics to anchor communities.

I agree that QTs are a major limit for quality discourse, you can't boost and add. Another thing that doesn't help is the mansplaining culture on Mastodon.

That said, I'm not convinced that AP federation has stronger decent properties. It's basically email and email is captured. So it might not be a major issue?

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@freakonometrics À chaque fois les notifications des médias français ne mentionnent que la nationalité et pas le travail récompensé. Ça me rend dingue.

I normally don't mind missing the IGF (internet governance forum) but this year it's in japan where I so keenly want to go, so my TL will be filling up with people there

and sure, I'm glad I don't have to be in conference-world and going from room to room listening to cliches and trying to dodge status games,

but I still kind of wish I was there!

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@mariafarrell Do you have thoughts for @chadkoh who is going but doesn't have experience? A couple of us tried to help but we've not done IGF either. https://talk.fission.codes/t/internet-governance-forum-2023-kyoto-pregame/5157

@ntnsndr What better accountability mechanism?

robin, to random
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

I wonder if it isn't time for a public campaign to call out the Mozilla Board on the fact that they are doing nothing whatsoever to hold the CEO accountable despite years of obvious mismanagement.

Thoughts?

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@fabrice @dale I was about to say a lot of what Fabrice said. Yes it's a hard problem and yes people have completely dumb ideas. That doesn't mean that it's not painfully obvious that a different direction is needed and won't happen under current conditions. People like Fabrice (or me 😁) have ideas that aren't dumb, it's not like it's hopeless!

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@bkoehn And you should be open to the idea that maybe I know what I'm talking about.

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@arod Sure, a coop (but maybe not just of its workers) would make a lot of sense.

We often tell how terrible search engines (on the Web) became and are wondering if there is a way to improve or fix them, but we don't ask ourselves if we need them in the first place, and more exactly what do we need to access information or navigate/curate our needs for specific purposes.

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@karlcow I think they are. I think that only web nerds imagine that browsers and search engines are different products, for most users they're exactly the one same thing. (And users are right, you can't just have naming.)

Google testified in court today that click data does not matter to search.

I take it this means that we can now remove the ping attribute from HTML?

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@doriantaylor I'm tempted to file a PR against HTML citing Google's testimony. Very tempted.

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@doriantaylor No, that would make it irresistibly hilarious 😂
