As a Marx might have said, 'I refuse to join any club that would have as a member.'

Unlike a terrible policy held while in Opposition, which can be rationalised away with 'Well they can't change anything now and they need to get elected', or 'They'll be better than they seem once they're in power', there's something about letting such a right-wing, bigoted monster into that crystallises the fact that Labour is truly lost under Starmer

For real

She'll cost them votes

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@Greenseer It is a disgusting, unprincipled betrayal of what should be

But the electoral calculus in the head of or his advisers will be this:

"We loses leftwing votes but mainly in areas where we will still win anyway but we pick up votes from a few old racists in marginal seats"

I think its incredibly damaging to long-term and a democratic farce to have an "oppostion" so indistinguishable on policy from the

Hydroponics is the bitcoin of agriculture.

It's a science experiment to grow plants on life support, everyone interested should try it, but it's not how we'll feed the world. The energy, maintenance and expertise costs will remain not worth it until life support is the only way left to grow plants.

We're still far from that, and, growing plants and trees in the ground will nudge the chance of worsening climate further away.

OliverNoble,

@wormerama @harshad I saw some modern agriculture described as:

Thats maybe generous given the quantity of fossil fuel and fossil fuel derived products used

The Greens were the biggest winners in the local elections, so why aren’t they getting fair air time? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/07/the-greens-were-the-biggest-winners-in-the-local-elections-so-why-arent-they-getting-fair-air-time/
Proportionately, the Greens won most seats at the recent local elections, but they are denied airtime, and we get Reform instead. Why?

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@Kellys @simon_brooke when the greens represent the same level of challenge to the status-quo as the , then then the smears, slurs and negative coverage of will step-up a gear - its already started

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@simon_brooke @Kellys very true, i should maybe have said they perceive the #SNP as a more immediate threat to the status-quo

In part because, although it is hardly reported and the Scottish parliament has limited powers, Scotland has lead on no fault evictions, nationalising rail, settling NHS pay etc - nothing very radical but if the people of #England saw how achievable things are, they might look at the "opposition" and start demanding something better

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@simon_brooke @Kellys 100℅ agree,

Given how poor and negative reporting about Scotland is, it might take a while for the English to notice but, in time, it would become incredibly obvious

it would be inspiring to the left to see Scotland achieve its potential once free to determine its own destiny

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@steviesyerda @simon_brooke @Kellys
Would the loss of Scotland from tbe union really lead to a rethink of England's place in the world? It should - but I think there will be a lot of this (below) for years and years:

"England doesn't need a "modern sense of self", we got churchill, England won the war (and world cup), got the royal family, the mother of parliaments, beer sold in pints, the SAS and Ross Kemp, we got ev'ry fing wot is worth 'avin"

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@steviesyerda @simon_brooke @Kellys
I had never thought of the union jack changing - that would be a constant, unavoidable and jarring change - especially now that the flag seems to fly continuously over all government and local government buildings

I bet England would still use the full union flag if they could and just pretend nothing changed - its the English way

Great idea though, if i was any good at graphics i would make a mock-up of it just for lols

Britain used to have the most polluted beaches in the EU, because UK sewage is led via channels directly into the sea.

Fortunately, UK politicians have now solved the problem… by leaving the EU, so the country does now show up in environmental statistics.

But the problem is now even worse in the UK.

https://edition.cnn.com/england-uk-sewage-poop-beach/index.html

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@randahl England used to have ships regularly taking sewage sludge down rivers, into the sea to dump it and that was terrible

  • Now we dont need the ships, gravity does the same job - such an efficient , market-based, solution - a triumph of privatisation

There is some irony at listening to Starmer urging an election to "Let the people decide", the same Starmer who does not recognise Scotland's right to have a referendum to "Let the people decide". Yes, indeed, we had one in 2014 but materially, the UK has changed. We have elections every five years yet Scotland is continually denied democracy by, in effect, a foreign country, England. Is the union voluntary, yes it is, how then does Scotland leave ?

Once the hoo-haa settles on local elections (that no-one in Scotland voted in — slight problem when you’re feverishly trying to extrapolate piss poor turn out into a General Election results map, eh?) even Beth Rigby is sounding crestfallen that Starmer has fucked up her chance to break a ‘landslide for our times’ prediction.

Starmer could still piss away the General Election. He’s so awful no one’s actively running too him — he’s winning because the Tories are staying home or voting Lunatic.

OliverNoble,
@OliverNoble@mastodon.world avatar

@Andy_European I agree with the analysis that says will really struggle with both turn-out and rejection of his gaza 'policy' among other failings

However, extrapolating from an English local election (in some areas only) to a general election is a huge stretch

The lib-dems wont get the same support as they do locally and there will probably be far fewer independents - and turnout will probably still be historically low but higher than thursday
