@jake4480 Hahaha thank you. Had a much needed solo nature day today

@Judeau LOL luckily that's not what went down but does make me wonder what I would post in that scenario

As could be imagined, there was no cell reception down in that cave, I had to walk to high ground on a trail to get signal so I could send this post hahah

two weeks ago i was approached by high-tech security system salesmen who i denied outright. they were legitimate but overpriced and devil-tongued and i don't need 8 cameras around my house connected to some shady company's cloud. flash forward to today's walk and i've counted their signs in over 12 yards. it's a cancer or a zombie apocalypse spread under the pretense of safety when really it's stoked by quota-driven salesmen fanning the flames of yes-yes-fear-your-fellow-neighbors.

@buru5 Oh oh but there might be a package stolen on your street one time in like 10 years, better just legitimize the 24/7 surveillance state

Tried again and experimented with adding onions and red raisins for sweetness - a la veneziana.

@buru5 Highly recommend the book "Bullshit Jobs: A Theory" by David Graeber. Makework is now just work

One underrated benefit from the internet's "appification" era from my perspective is how the domain name arms race doesn't hold the same potency that it did years ago.

Even on a PC, I find myself just clicking on bookmarked website icons or links from other sources rather than typing a URL from scratch. I'm generally more concerned about the content contained in the site than what it's actually called.

Am I crazy, or are domain names just not the same mark of legitimacy that they used to be?

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 The whole concept of paying yearly for a web address has always frustrated me. I remember using .tk for everything when I was a teenager since it was free lol

Agreed on the .com point too, it's just boring and doesn't apply to anything I would be doing on the net anyway

I recently learned that the word finicky only has one "n". Pretty cool that the language I speak is a glorified minefield designed to make me look foolish when I inevitably take an errant step

I think this is an important post for anyone with a hobby.

You can’t just hide behind the nostalgia without seeing the big picture. It’s not healthy.

@thomasfuchs If I can't like Windows XP because it existed at the same time as the Iraq war, then I guess every piece of technology and media that exists today should be invalidated while existing concurrent to the US-backed mass slaughter of Palestinians

Nostalgia absolutely can be weaponized in reactionary movements but that doesn't mean it is categorically wrong. By the same token, new technology is not good because some people's social values have improved

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Didn't get that impression, especially in the opening section, could have just missed the point

Far be it from me to invalidate a trans woman's experience of an admittedly horrible decade for LGBTQ people

Just wish the analysis in the piece was less inflammatory, I agree with your point but it didn't come across. Maybe people building walls of nostalgia are actually shielding from today's horrors. The average person using an old computer wasn't responsible for yesterday's horrors

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Additionally I just don't buy the framing that remembering something fondly from your childhood evidences your complicity or approval of other unrelated events
