UK folks:

  • Publisher states a payment has been made + sent remittance.
  • I have not received the funds (after six weeks now) and my (UK) bank’s customer services, fraud and international teams have all stated they cannot see any payment and that I do not have a block on my account.

Any advice on what to do? I’ve never been in this situation before, and the amount of money is not insignificant. But also, the publisher appears to be very much in “we’ve paid so nothing we can do” mode now.

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell They sent remittance? That’s really odd because I’m pretty sure that’s generated by Sage/Xero/etc when they schedule the payment within the software.

This is a super silly question, but have you checked all of the dates on the remittance advice? Are you definitely past the payment arrival date? (And have you had payments from this client before?)

Doesn’t sound like a fob off job to me, now. If it’s a big company that’s someone’s job on the line if they’ve faked remittance.

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell A few times I’ve used MCO and the company has gone into administration, which is why they didn’t pay me.

When that happens you’ll be added to the list of unsecured creditors so if there is anything to dish out after the liquidation then you might get something for your trouble. But in reality you won’t, because they’ll owe money to their administrators, financiers and HMRC who’ll take priority. But you do get regular updates about their liquidation though, which is… fun?

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Sorry for the spam, but hope that’s helpful. Good luck, and don’t let them fob you off!

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell I’ve used MCO a few times and I’ve found the process easy. You have to pay a fee to file a claim, but the company you’re claiming from will need to reimburse you if you’re successful.

Of course, it’s a risk as it’s taking them to court, and therefore it is very serious, but if it’s a case of delayed payment then it should be cut and dry in your favour, and the company you’re claiming against should simply settle before it goes to court. (You then tell the court you’ve settled.)

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell If it is looking like you need to take action, you’ll need to give them a fair notice. So you might still be tussling this one for a few weeks or even months, because if they genuinely have tried to make a payment then you would appear unreasonable to not at least try to be cooperative in finding a resolution.

Give them a few weeks after you issue your final notice before taking any action.

If there are no other options, your nuclear option is Money Claim Online. (Small claims.)

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell If they’re cagey about helping you, then chances are they’re just fobbing you off for some reason. Either they’re delaying paying (because they have no money, probably) or they’re going to see if they can kick it so far down the road that you’ll give up.

In which case, you need to get firm and inform them that you will need to start formal recovery proceedings to ensure you receive the money you’re owed.

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell In my experience, I wouldn’t threaten court. “Recovery proceedings” keeps your options open so that they can’t accuse you of being unfair if you do something else. E.g. assuming it’s writing, you must own the copyright on the work you’ve done. Not sure what options you have, but for me (with video) I can submit a copyright claim with YouTube for example – which has sometimes pushed the right buttons to make an overdue bank transfer happen.

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell that is so incredibly bizarre.

I’ve experienced some messing around from one or two big companies, but not to a point of sending bogus remittance. (That would surely be fraud.)

I’d assume for now that something has fallen through the cracks somewhere. I think you’re just going to need to be persistent. Definitely worth being firm with them to get them to take you seriously, though. Regardless of what they think they’ve done, you haven’t received the payment.

This Reddit thread does not inspire confidence about the future of Bartender. And that sucks, because Bartender is a great app.

From: @lapcatsoftware

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell @lapcatsoftware It is!

But I think, given the weirdness around this, I’m going to uninstall it tomorrow and move to HiddenBar.

Acquisition means someone sees a way of extracting more money out of it. The fact it’s not been sold transparently is concerning, and makes me wonder what might get slipped into the app without disclosure.

This prompted me to write something about where the iPad fits: https://medium.com/@rowanjohnson/where-does-the-ipad-fit-in-ae17469246a0

TL;DR the iPad is a “couch computer” and the idea of making an iPad Pro was a mistake.

And that's 10 games beat in 2024! 🙌

Just beat Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, which I know gets a bad rap, but I enjoyed it as someone who hadn't played a Pokémon game since Red when it was new.

Super satisfying getting into the grind and building up my team around the world without it getting too complicated.

I will say the art style is very far from anything I'd consider my style. It feels cheap to me and the in-battle visual style is totally different and much better.

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@matt It’s a good game because it’s a like-for-like remake of a good game.

You’re right – it gets a bad rap. But that’s because it feels cheap (from one of the biggest media franchises in the world!) and it’s a very literal remake; unlike other Pokémon remakes, which fully redesigned the game, added new mechanics, and often included newer Pokémon and additional features post-game.

It felt like they dialled this in.

On top of that, Platinum was regarded as the better game of this generation.

My review of the brand new Magic Keyboard for iPad that just came out yesterday.

  1. Metal construction makes it feel way better
  2. Haptic trackpad is wonderful
  3. Function row makes it more…functional

Love this thing.

This kind of crap hits home because I remember the years of stress after Brexit, in working out what we’d do as a family. When time and time again, my Icelandic wife fell through the cracks. The thousands we spent on legal fees. (Our lawyer was ace though.) The bureaucracy. The local library displaying Mein Kampf prominently next to where foreigners had to supply biometric data. The almost performative cruelty of the system. The absurd twists of the knife from the Home Office. Tear it all down.

@craiggrannell my OH is Filipino and was on the front lines during Covid. (Her ward became a Covid ward.) Everyone clapped, but what she really needs is permanent residency without having to pay thosands of pounds for the privilege.

Most British born people are totally shielded from our immigration system. But once you get close, you see how strict and punishing it is. The cost of becoming a resident, then citizen, is slow and expensive. And yet politicians have the audacity to weaponise it.

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell exactly, and thank you. Despite what the rags say, it’s really hard to get residency and citizenship here. The average person has no idea how visas and immigration works.

Ah yes, someone asking for the Mac to get a new feature only to be flooded with replies telling him why it’s actually good his needs aren’t being met and nothing needs to change.

I can relate 🫣

@ravi @matt that’s per unit - but looks like I haven’t been paying attention recently. Cellular is £200 extra on the new iPad Pros!

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@ravi @matt they must have weighed it up and realised that earning an extra £100 on a % of Mac sales doesn’t balance out the headaches that come with offering cellular on Macs.

But I’m surprised it’s not an option at this point. It’s an easy upsell, it would encourage the sale of Macs on contract, and they’d be on sale in carrier stores alongside iPhones. Odd!

It’s been quite something to see Americans and Brits discover in real time how much of their systems rely heavily on the “good chap” theory of government. And also whether the safeguards are strong enough to withstand major assaults from bad actors. (To date: barely.)

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell @ravi Americans have a tendency to do things to a much grander scale than us Brits...

If you had just caught a shiny (normal) Rattata, would you evolve it into a Raticate? 🤔

rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@andycarolan it depends what you’re doing in the game. I’m currently trying to build a shiny living dex, and I need shiny Raticate, so I’d evolve it. But if you’re just having fun and the shiny is a bonus, I’d keep the cute little shiny rat. ☺️

The new album is excellent!

And because they recorded the gang vocals for n/A with the crowds at their shows earlier this year, I guess I can technically say I feature on it?! 😂

Visited my local 🍎 Store to try the new iPad Pros. They’re nice!

But I can’t justify upgrading my 2018 11”. The new model is much thinner, but the thickness and weight of my iPad aren’t issues for me. (At least not when it’s naked. The Smart Keyboard is hefty, but the new models are still heavy in that combo.)

The iPadOS software story at WWDC is going to be interesting. Because the only thing that really makes new iPad hardware desirable is the software it can run; which the older ones can’t.

Behind the scenes of my involvement with the Betasquad vs AMP charity football match at Selhurst Park this weekend.

Our @southpointfilms trailer was hired to accommodate three chase editors and myself as a supporting GFX op. I also helped with rigging and de-rigging, including setting up three PTZs for behind the scenes changing room and tunnel footage.

Such a fun job!

(The stream itself racked up 5.8 million YouTube views in 24 hours!)

Off the back of this job, I'm desperate to see some of the Tech YouTubers I follow engage in similar sporting activities.

@matt – Do you think you and @ChrisLawley could assemble a team each for a 5 a-side footy match? 😂

Apple’s response to the DMA is kind of crazy when you compare it to their approach with China. I guess they feel they have less to lose in Europe 🤷‍♂️
