I miss so much.

One day, one fine day in the far future, I will have the energy, the motivation, and the confidence to blog again.

    @chris Been using them for a while. DNS configuration is clumsy as usual but other than that, pretty good.

    Doesn't appear to integrate with Firefox if a website already has its own emoji picker (it does handle this situation in Chrome and Safari), but oh well. It's still better than macOS' native emoji picker.

    @annika I am not using Alfred. 🤔

    Should I be...?

    I do have Raycast. Raycast does do emojis. That's another one I am trialing so I don't have to install yet another macOS app... (Rocket)

    I want to blog again but I'm always so exhausted.

    It's a debilitating feeling not being able to do the things you want to do.

    (I had decaf for the first time ever today)

    ru,
    @ru@fosstodon.org avatar

    @grueproof I like it... avoided a crash, and my mood is more stable. I wasn't feeling ready for a rush, and wanted the taste still.

    Decaf is really hard to find here in cafes at least. If it was easily available, I'd mix and match depending on the day.

    The content is so basic cause it was all very impromptu.

    But yeah - maybe I can start writing ??? Internationally???

    How much does this kind of thing cost

    I need some very simple home automation. I want to be able to turn on three power outlets when I leave home and when I come home. The switches are not super accessible and it's a pain.

    I want to do this with my phone (but not necessarily) and I don't want to invest too much. Barely ₹4000–5000 ($50–60) for all of it.

    Any ideas? Anyone who's already done this (locally)?

    ru,
    @ru@fosstodon.org avatar

    @badrihippo @abhas I'm assuming I can always get up and turn them on/off individually if I want to, so if simultaneous is easier, it will fit my current use-case.

    Yesterday I wrote this blogpost about just trying to write at a more constant pace, which is one of the things I would like to change from last year, make this a habit, not a rush.

    Loooong shot, but I've taken those before. What's one more time?

    A friend is moving to Dublin to study for a year. Her Lenovo Yoga 910 (came out in 2016ish) needs a bit of a repair. One of the speakers is bust.

    A repair shop here in India said the laptop is too old and they can't fix it - can't find the parts is what it is.

    Any shops in Dublin you know to be budget-friendly and can get this done?

    ru,
    @ru@fosstodon.org avatar

    @adamsdesk Unlikely she’ll do it herself. But good shout on how much this would cost in terms of parts! Thank you!

    Anyone backing up their onto their PC?

    I have about 26,000 photos that are taking forever to sync from scratch. I'm also not seeing a lot of .MOV files for live images for a lot of these images - worrying!

    The Photos folder has reserved ~106 GB but actual size on disk is only ~85 MB so far. Apple's estimate on Photos storage on iCloud is about ~150 GB, so that's yet another discrepancy that worries me.

    Localisation doesn't mean you pass on the costs but keep charging US-first prices. 🫠

    This looks so tone-deaf to me.

    Thankfully my current subscription runs through to August next year until when I can re-visit using a different, more affordable email provider.

    ru,
    @ru@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Shrigglepuss I do too... I was justifying such a massive expense on my books cause their email interface is so nice! This feels like a 20% bump when I was looking forward to a localised price from the company one of these days...

    I no longer use their contacts or calendar, so I guess it's time to go...?

    ru,
    @ru@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Shrigglepuss I'm likely going to go back to Migadu's Micro plan ($19/year). Very basic, but supports nearly unlimited domains, wildcard addresses etc.

    @grueproof Very dark show. Remember to balance out the sad feels with happy feels. 💕

    In just a few months, I will have had my MacBook Air for 2 years. Can't believe it's been that long.

    What this does make me happy about is I have found time to focus on a lot of other things in my life during these ~2 years.

    I went back and read my original blog post - my goal was to run this for "2 or 3 years" - later moving that estimate to "~5 years" based on how happy I was with the purchase.

    ru,
    @ru@fosstodon.org avatar

    Given recent troubles with the memory, I think I might try to bite on the original estimate though (~2 years). Still need to work the viability of this whole thing out.

    What’s really annoying is that I think I could still make 16 GB memory work, but the Node ecosystem (specifically development tools and processes) and apps like VS Code and Chrome (partially) are what’s forcing this upgrade. Which means 24 GB will just land me up in the same spot 2 years later (history holding true).

    ru,
    @ru@fosstodon.org avatar

    @kytta I don't mind full RAM usage at all times. It's when there is constant read/write from swap over and above. 🥲

    But maybe that's not an issue, really? -> https://fosstodon.org/@ru/111102781206020018
