I've always wondered why top-down games make house interiors bigger than their exteriors. So, I tried making everything to scale...

Now I know why—it's SO much harder than I expected! (But I still think it's worth it!)

After 6 months, I've had to resubscribe to Adobe PS. I work with too many people who send me PS files and there is no alternative that can open and save them reliability. It sad how many "helper" apps Adobe installs and how often they try to connect to the internet. I block them all, but it's scary. I have to unblock them every 30 days. Please do not suggest alternatives unless you know for a fact they load and save .psd files seamlessly. Do not suggest GIMP or I block you.

@saint11@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer I literally cancelled my subscription today (they increased the price again?!) Currently I'm winging it with Affinity + Clip studio, but I then don't have anyone sending me .psd files, which is much easier. But yeah, currently, I don't think there's any real alternative.

LayerProcGen is a framework for layer-based procedural generation that's infinite, deterministic and contextual, that I'll release as open source later this year.

Check out the documentation work in progress and let me know if you have questions!

Video showing terrain with debug visualizations appearing, show locations and how they're connected. The camera then zooms out and shows various data layers visualized under the terrain.

@runevision This looks super interesting, I'm also glad it works on non-Unity C# projects

I just found out that if you press Ctrl+K, K on Visual Studio you can bookmark a line for you to come back later. My life will never be the same anymore.

I do wish Aseprite had an api that could do an export exactly like you can from the command line. Maybe there is a way to do that? @aseprite

saint11,
@saint11@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer @aseprite Aseprite has a pretty powerful CLI, you can even run Lua scripts with it. But our engine mostly read the Aseprite file format directly, so we never need to export.

The more that I see AI polluting the web, the more I am convinced that a return to small websites run by humans, and human-run social media is the only way we can survive.

saint11,
@saint11@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ben Yep, I can't agree more! Fragmentation is actually a good thing right now. That's one of the reasons I'm running https://gamedev.city/

saint11,
@saint11@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ben Yeah! I used the lobste.rs codebase: https://github.com/lobsters/lobsters
It's a not very simple setup, HMU if you need help!

I'm tired of social media, but I miss the sharing of resources, so I decided to host this thing: https://gamedev.city/ It's just a link aggregator, like Hacker News, Reddit, but for game dev resources! Feel free to request an invite, I'll review them soon!

Using "Open" and "Closed" for switches is a bit confusing.
Closed = contacts are touching and signal can pass.
Open = contacts are separated and signal is blocked.

But an open door can be passed through, and a closed door is blocking.

Maybe draw-bridge terminology could be used instead, as those are inverse – passable when connected or "Bridged", and impassable when "Parted"... "Divided"?
Normally Bridged.
Normally Parted.

Every now and then I want to make a procedural image or PDF, like cards for game prototyping, grid papers, etc. Is there a good and modern library for drawing that? (Ideally c# but I'm up for anything with an easy setup)

saint11,
@saint11@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ericraue Ideally yes, I wanted a solution that I could use to quickly procedurally draw and generate images. Right now I'm using SkiaSharp, but it's kinda clunky.

Is it acceptable to have your game crash if you leave it running for 400 days straight?
