This week TrueFans has enabled support for the og:audio meta tag, part of the Open Graph protocol, which is supported in the Messages app on iPhone and MacOS. https://ogp.me
Send someone a link from a TrueFans episode to Messages and it renders with the image, headline, and a little audio button - which, when pressed, plays the linked audio. h/t @jamescridland
We are now looking at the other supported object types of music, audiobooks and video to see what else we can do with OGP.
My new favourite AP client is @phanpy It's open source and a PWA. #winwin None of this iOS/Android proprietary closed app bullshit. https://phanpy.social/ :pc2red:
According to FediDB, the ActivityPub side of the Fediverse is now used by nearly 10 million people, across more than 27,000 servers. FediDB also tracks 48 different platforms leveraging ActivityPub in some way. With Threads actively doing work their own implementation, these stats are likely to skyrocket, in more ways than one.
When I first heard Elon Musk was going to charge newbies on X, like most I thought well that's the end of X.
Pay to post
Pay to reply
Pay to like
But then I thought isn't that exactly what Podcasting 2.0 is trying to encourage users to do?
Pay to stream
Pay to boost
Pay to zap
If Elon can (re)introduce micropayments to X for the payments and give everyone a wallet then maybe he is helping train the mass market to pay for content creators.
@samsethi@James Elon is simply expanding the “Not-a-Bot Program”, which has been live since last October.
The best way to understand this is that it’s a captcha with 1000% friction, unless or until bots can fabricate credit card numbers (don’t bother holding your breath).
It has nothing to do with micropayments for content, although Jack’s Twitter previously had tipping.
Reading more about Solid (Social Linked Data) a web decentralization project led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web.
Solid is a specification that lets people store their data securely in decentralized data stores called Pods. Pods (Personal Object Database) which are like secure personal web servers for your data.
I was going to subscribe to Evan Prodromou's new premium account but realised this is not Value 4 Value. This is the old web model of pay me every month even if I offer no value. Me paying Evan would be a leap of faith to believe he will deliver me $5 or more value. Now Evan may well do that but in a Value 4 Value model I would pay Evan what I wanted to based on me valuing his content and then only paying for what I consume. This is one reason why ActivityPub needs to support SATs.
I want V4V without crypto and automatic based on consumption. I set a monthly amount in my bank that I am comfortable with and via player apps and open protocol techno magic, the money gets distributed based on time reading, listening and watching. once this works, the fight becomes to make more people embrace it with enough money collectively that every creator supports it. goodbye all corporate platform middlemen (and their advertisers) like Netflix and Spotify etc.
Good article to read in The Verge on the future of social media and the use of ActivityPub to make it happen.
Love This Quote:
"a rare chance to unbundle the internet, to pull apart an existing system and rebuild it, piece by piece, in vastly better ways. If we do this correctly — if the next phase of how we congregate and communicate online is built for humans and not advertisers . "
