Built a custom drafting experience and it's wonderful. No more writing in the publishers' word docs.

@assertchris interesting. How and what did you build this with?

Conferences are always inspiring for me.

Attending a conference makes me wish I could resurrect The Crafting Code Tour again, for both America and Europe.

This past week I had a problem at DayJob that would’ve been easier to solve if we had adopted the use of repositories that create immutable value objects. Since this is a Laravel project, I was overruled. My first implementation ended up being wrong (found out via production testing) and the fix ended up involving Eloquent mutators.

I still think value objects are the better solution but my boss both disagrees and trolls me about it.

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer trolling by a boss that makes an employee uncomfortable is harassment and actionable under American and Canadian law. Bullying has no place at work.

@grmpyprogrammer ah that wasn’t clear from your post.

As a developer being able to learn from your mistakes is crucial.

I have made many mistakes in my time as a developer. I seek to correct them and move on.

It’s an important skill for any developer to possess.

@heiglandreas poor flower. I’ve had to cone my cats more than once so I know how grumpy they get.

Please, web app developers, consider how your users will upgrade. If your upgrade process is "remove the old one, unzip the new one", then it's not an upgrade process. It's an encouragement to never upgrade.

@Crell I’d love to understand the context here…

Hello, Dublin.

I was asked yesterday how much I rehearse my talks.

Simple answer: I don’t.

More complicated answer: I make my talk outline and have presenter notes on what I want to say. I know the talk intimately and I prepare to say what I want to say. I never write my talks out or practice the speech, though; I find it limits the authenticity.

If you hear me speak you’re hearing me speak what I’m saying for the first time ever in that exact way. Every talk is unique, even ones I’ve given before.

Can anyone decently explain to me why people are so fixated on assigning a gender to someone?

Why is that important?

You wanna address them? "Hey [whatever the person told you they want to be called]"

You weren't told how to address them? "Excuse me: I'm Andreas, What's your name?"

They don't tell you? Have you considered that they probably don't want to talk to you?

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas names can easily communicate gender for usage of pronouns but it’s never rude to ask someone “what pronouns do you use?”

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas absolutely agree.

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas you know, you’re right.

Sydney is both, so is Ryan in America.

Thank you to everyone that made @phpday a truly amazing experience for me. The organizers, the sponsors, the Attendees and speakers and mostly all the old and new friends I was able to meet. And the feeling that this was growing a community!

Thank you all!

And also thank you to the pope for making todays tourist excursion a truly interesting visit 😂

The main piazza in verona. The arena to the left with a queue of people waiti g to pass the security scanner to get in. In the background some mobile tv stations prepared for broadcasting a speech of the pope.

sarah,

@heiglandreas @shochdoerfer I think @phpday made the right call, no? :D

sarah,

@heiglandreas was it truly that good? 😳/cc @shochdoerfer @phpday

@airwhale @phpday on my way home right now actually.

Causes issues with auto queueing posts.

@airwhale it was lovely.

Now approaching North American airspace.

PHP needs a code of conduct for the project itself. Is there anyone willing to push for an RFC to add one with me?

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@derickr sadly I was a detractor of the CoC last time. I see it’s value now. I would strongly support it./cc @heiglandreas @ramsey @Crell @pronskiy

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@maccath It most certainly has. I've experienced colleagues dismissing my perspective or taking credit for my ideas. I've experienced discrimination. I've experienced many things that I assumed didn't happen but they do.

It has shaped my viewpoint. I'm sorry for the times that I made comments or had views that were harmful.

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@Crell so I take it you’re not going to support CC as the CoC? @heiglandreas @ramsey @pronskiy
