Question for hiring managers…

I think my ADHD holds me back from being able to perform well during technical interviews. I’ve never requested accommodation, though.

If a candidate were to request accommodation for neurodivergence, what are some reasonable accommodations you might provide such a candidate?

@ramsey Honestly, the biggest thing would be a list of the questions in advance. Or the ability to demonstrate technical abilities WITHOUT doing them live. For example, a take home assignment or similar.

When I give a technical interview, I often focus on the discussion, rather than asking someone to whiteboard or code live. I think if someone can tell me what they LOVE about their favorite framework, or HATE about it, shows more technical skill than whether they can program FizzBuzz.

Working on a new idea for a talk. It’s called DRM - developer resource management - and it’s a framework for helping projects succeed, developers thrive, and companies avoid embarrassing incidents of security and downtime.

What user groups would like a speaker?

There's a huge advantage to choosing a boring stack over the new shiny: the boring stack has years if not decades of people talking about it on places like blogs, Stack Overflow and more, to help guide you when things go wrong.

Building exciting things doesn't require the new shiny.

"Boring", battle-tested tech can be lots of fun, too. And easier to fix, to boot.

I feel like I’m living in 1933 Germany.

Calling certain individuals “not people”? Threatening to round up a huge group in camps? Promising to weaponize government to go after adversaries? Threatening the rights of citizens just because you don’t like them?

Tell me I’m overreacting. Please. I want to be overreacting.

I understand accidents happen in war zones.

But when your troops consistently kill people who are hungry or trying to feed those who are hungry, your “it was an accident” pleas start feeling a bit hollow.

Saw a shirt that said “Reproductive rights. Healthcare for all. Voting rights. Immigration. Police reform. LGBTQ+ rights. This is pro life.”

Never had my entire political perspective encapsulated in a shirt before.

Assessing people for a role?

Ensure that your assessment fully matches the job at hand.

For example, algorithm questions have no place if you are asking them to develop a basic website.

Math and logic questions have no bearing on a candidate's technical ability if you're not asking them to do complex mathematical calculations as part of the job.

Assess ONLY for what you're hiring for. Otherwise you risk acing out candidates who have disabilities.

Do you rehearse your disaster recovery plans?

Have you ever stood up, from scratch, a completely new version of your application in a production-ready state?

If you haven't, you should.

You may never need to fully stand up a complete production instance, but what happens if a part goes down like your database, your webservers, or your jobs? Are you prepared for emergencies?

Practice makes perfect, especially in high-pressure situations. So practice!
