Thank bigpharma for lexapro, because tornado season used to have me unable to function and, while I am distracted by the sirens going off, I also am calm and know I'm not at high risk where I am.

Welp i guess it's on it's way over here 😔

Nothing makes me want to take a shower more than a thunderstorm/tornado warning 😂

been trying to find a way to say this succinctly but I’m having trouble: it annoys me when people conflate laziness and anti-productivity. If capitalism is not just buying and selling things then similarly anti-productivity is not just laziness. There is good work and good labor that needs doing. Idealizing a certain type of laziness and calling it anti-productivity annoys me because it suggests that doing anything = being productive and therefore evil and just no

schomj,
@schomj@disabled.social avatar

@nathanlovestrees it makes sense to me. It's like how sometimes I'm sick of working for my employer because I'm disgusted with the system, but I find it refreshing to wash my own dishes or fold my sister's laundry so she can get a break

Bibliography of books and articles about +

(I finally cleared up all the links that broke when I moved platforms! Also if anyone knows of pieces that should be added, please let me know!)

Question (with set-up) for disabled folks only:

My disability thought has been molded by the late, great DIsability Twitter. I didn't have time aside from grad school reading to read up on disability history and analysis. What are the best books/articles to read to introduce someone to disability history, ableism, and internalized ableism? Something not too dry or academic. I'm trying to make a recommendation to a newly disabled person with lots of I. A.

@meganL @disability @disabilityjustice the most friendly and welcoming intro to a general audience I've ever seen is the book Demystifying Disability by Ladau

schomj,
@schomj@disabled.social avatar

@meganL @disability @disabilityjustice I'd say it appropriate for both audiences, especially if you're friend is new to talking about disability in this way

Hello @criplib members and supporters!

Those of us on the discord have drafted an open letter to the IDEAL Conference Planning team to express our concerns about the lack of accessibility.

If you're a library person and want to sign on in support please do!

Minneapolis schools added more librarians. Now books are flying off the shelves

I wonder if the reason the doctor said to take an off-the-shelf probiotic instead of eating yogurt is that they realized dairy reduces the effectiveness of antibiotics at some point since the last time I needed one

It's really weird when people who post regularly just disappear from discord servers. Like, I always have so many questions but also the main answer is "no" which I want to respect but also maybe there's something going on and reaching out would help but also maybe they don't want to repair whatever relationship they chose to sever through leaving.

Thinking once again about how one of the biggest barriers to me going car-free is the lack of public transit to my health care centers

Was there an article going around here recently about the humanities being a profit center for universities because of how cheap they are to run? If so, could someone link me to it? @academicchatter

I think it's really funny how people will come up to me and tell me that it's good that I'm wearing a mask and that someone they live with would be at high risk of serious complications if they got COVID and ... they're unmasked. It makes me all ????

All right, I think I'm going to do a Labor Day thread with info about workplace accommodations for employees with disabilities in the US.

Note 1: I am not a lawyer

Note 2: This info is from Ask JAN, the ADANN, and the EEOC

schomj,
@schomj@disabled.social avatar

As soon as you tell your boss that you have a medical need to adjust your working conditions, that is the start of the interactive accommodation process, whether or not you use the words "ADA" or "accommodation".

Document that, for your protection.

schomj,
@schomj@disabled.social avatar

If you have a disability that is negatively impacting your work performance

(in other words, you need different supports to be successful than most people or need modifications to performance expectations)

you need to disclose that BEFORE your performance review to receive ADA protections
