scottmeme,

As mozz said, DigitalOcean is a good company, but looking for that much storage you would be spending upwards of $100/mo.

And if you are running anything illegal, you will likely have your instance investigated and have your ssh keys and password overwritten by whoever is hosting it.

If you are looking for something that is as private as possible, you would be looking for a bulletproof host, which will cost significantly more.

Assuming you aren’t looking to run anything illegal, I also provide hosting, and you can reach out to me if interested.

scottmeme,

I actually haven’t used their storage volumes, my bad for not actually looking at that pricing.

Why is TikTok seen as privacy invading and bad, but Facebook is fine?

I’m not here to claim that Tiktok is completely harmless, or that it’s even a good site. I’m sure they absolutely do collect as much personal information as they can, and I’m sure they give it to the Chinese government whenever they ask. But I don’t understand how Meta and Facebook are meant to be any better? There’s...

scottmeme,

I tolerate Facebook on my network, but tiktok is an absolute no for me, null routed.

scottmeme,

I’ll let my previous comment answer that question.

Sublinks Aims to Be a Drop-In Replacement for Lemmy (wedistribute.org)

Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy’s Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps...

scottmeme,

Yup it was down, don’t know if the admins made a statement yet.

scottmeme,

God I hate our state government

Also remember Ken Paxton is a criminal

scottmeme,

I just have one giant playlist with all the music I like

Will I get a virus from movie-web.app?

So I’ve heard that this is the best website for watching movies, as it doesn’t have any ads and doesnt redirect you anywhere or anything like that. However, the site plays videos from other sites, which do contain malware, and I’ve heard that you can get a virus from simply playing a video online. So while movie-web itself...

scottmeme,

It’s open source check for yourself

github.com/movie-web/movie-web

scottmeme,

And they can check the source code himself and if they don’t like what they see they can move on.

scottmeme,

My go-to right now is GitLab, I even run an instance.

Another one that has caught my attention was onedev.

Another question about used hard drives

Did decide to go the used drive route just saving up and waiting for the right deal from a good seller. I did notice on eBay specifically that some sellers have tested drives for a great price per tb with a shit seller’s warranty (30 days to 1 year) but offer insurance for a significantly longer length of time for a few more...

scottmeme,

I’ve bought plenty of used drives, like 25-30 from eBay alone, only had around 5 SSDs fail after pretty heavy abuse. I’ve also bought refurbished drives, they are really good value from buying brand new ones.

scottmeme,

SSDs were from Garland computers (great company and visited locally)

All the refurb drives are water panther from Amazon, but they have a website you can buy from directly. They are RMA drives from Western Digital and Seagate with 0 hours.

Amazon pricing makes no sense.

We have been buying extra strong PG Tips British tea from Amazon because we think American tea is way too weak. 3 boxes of 80 were about $40 last time I bought them a few months ago. They’re now $80. Thankfully we discovered we can get an order of 6 for $60, but we have to wait until mid-February for the to arrive. Meanwhile,...

You can use the extension keepa to know if you are getting a real deal.

scottmeme,

Not that this is helpful, but I’ve found the lack of push notifications to be a bit freeing, I can just check on my own time instead of needing to instantly reply.

scottmeme,

Speaking as someone who worked for a corporate auto maker, it won’t be an easy task since they try to make it as difficult as possible to disable online activation if even providing the ability at all.

The only real solution is pulling the head unit and trying to find any modem and desolder it, which who knows if it would function as it had before hand since everything is integrated.

It will also hurt resale value.

scottmeme,

The newer cars from the company I worked for were always trying to phone home, not sure about other companies but this one was trying to lock you into the online ecosystem.

scottmeme,

I mean Abbott is pretty fucking evil, like limiting payouts after taking a massive payout from getting crushed by a tree.

scottmeme,

Man won’t stand for the nation anthem 😡

scottmeme,

They went closed source and alienated a large part of the community
