The Ascent (1977) might be the coldest film I've ever seen

And I have seen The Great White Silence (1924), The Thing (1982), Zero Kelvin (1995), and Godland (2022), all fantastic

What's your favourite freezing ?

@bryankam Society of the Snow felt pretty cold.

I am utterly dismayed to find out that they've been adding new words to the Scrabble dictionary this whole time. Just lost a game with four (4) unsuccessful challenges on words that were added in the last 20 years.

seanpatrickphd,
@seanpatrickphd@mastodon.social avatar

@Parkplusplus The ones that really stung were "GI" and "GOA" - the former because I (thought I) had the 2-letter words memorized, and the latter because it's a place name and I remember constantly getting in trouble for using those in the old days!

19. Do you agree with Hilary Mantel that [paraphrase] the best qualities for writing are self-confidence and a little arrogance?

Jumping back into to WCC for this one because I think it's a good question. I think self-confidence and arrogance are some of the most useful qualities one can have in general (I'm not happy about it either) - writing is not the exception. Does having an excess of confidence make you a good or likable person? No, but it helps you get things done.

That's bothered me for ages. What stopped the "good" guys from developing a plan? Any plan?

@Adam_Cadmon1 The two parties always remind me of the words of Dark Helmet..."Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb."

Every once in a while my brain just decides to go "but why?" recursively until I end up falling down a research rabbit hole.

I wanted to spend this afternoon working on my novel, instead I spent it reading papers...at this point in my academic career, the novel would probably have been the better use of time.

Anyway, let me ask you this: why is the homunculus that shape? Like, how does the cortex end up with that pattern in it? Obviously it reflects the body, but why?

BUT WHY INDEED

@echoingfrog Just came across your profile and rather than starring all of your posts, I just want to say that all of your haiku are lovely. Nice also to see kigo and kireji (or equivalent) in English language haiku. Bravo!

I sent an email to the folks over at the "Jesus, He gets Us" campaign.

I pointed out that if they look at the source material, Jesus is part of the Trinity, so Jesus' correct pronoun would be "them".

I have not, as yet, heard back.

I remain hopeful.

@chriswho True, but in John 18:5, Jesus clearly indicates "I am he", thus setting the precedent for all Christians to specify their pronouns

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

seanpatrickphd,
@seanpatrickphd@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr That the way someone enters into and resolves conflict says volumes about them and their relationship to you.

A lot of people seem to think it's not normal or desirable to have conflicts with your partner, but my experience has been the opposite. Being able to disagree civilly and make up quickly afterwards is a much better indicator of a healthy relationship than never coming into conflict at all.

Subject your relationship to the "IKEA test".

Had a poem published recently in the Spring '24 issue of Consilience. The knowledge argument is one of my favorite things to come out of the philosophy of mind, and I'm thrilled to have a poem about it out there.
