@datajake1999 had written a brand new OS for the iPod Touch. To install it, you first had to apply a custom made jailbreak, and once the OS was installed, you had to use a very specific type of USB cable to connect the iPod to your computer, and use a very specific version of iTunes, otherwise you'd wind up completely bricking your iPod.

is 1 year old today. 1 year. 365 days. 8760 hours somewhere. 525,600 minutes somewhere. Chew on that for a few! And feel free to sing 'five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes' if you want :)

Happy Thanksgiving to anyone who celebrates! To get some resemblance of enjoyment out of this day before my family arrives, I made another little audio production. Take this as a lesson, future Quin. Never, ever, invite @Kaliah to your Thanksgiving dinner. And, if you do, @BTyson and @BrailleScreen will just walk out on you when it inevitably gets ugly.

Here's a demo of something I've been hammering away at for the past 2 hours.

You know, Alt text is really freaking important. But when all your Alt text is is something like:

Some options that Google’s Ad Manager currently offers for targeting your campaign by user interests.

Well, what options are those? This doesn't help me. Now, here's AI:

The image shows a computer screen with an open web browser displaying a user interface for selecting audience segments as part of an advertising or marketing campaign. The interface enables the user to add or observe audience segments based on their interests and habits related to television viewing. The options visible include:

  • TV Lovers
  • Documentary & Nonfiction TV Fans
  • Family Television Fans
  • Game, Reality & Talk Show Fans
  • Sci-Fi & Fantasy TV Fans
  • TV Comedy Fans
  • TV Drama Fans

Now, I know, 100% of that could be made up. I'm sure the AI-hessitant people will say that it is anyway. But my goodness, having Alt text just for the sake of Alt text, just doesn't help.

seedy,

@devinprater Maybe you can get a real human with real thoughts, real feelings and real working eyes to verify it?

Well, I've finally completed the DECTalk TTS skit. But now the inferiority complex is setting in. are people going to like it? It did take me a total of 3 days to make, after all, due to extremely limited computer time. Let's upload this thing to YouTube, I guess. @datajake1999

You know, it's kinda crazy that Mac now has a Hammerspoon to allow VoiceOver users to get an image described by GPT4-vision, but there's no NVDA addon for this. Kinda makes me wonder if the blind developer community for Macs is going to have more tools than Windows folks one of these days. They already have VOCR, sounds for UI actions, offline, I think, translation of the VO cursor's contents, and probably more Hammerspoon stuff.

seedy,

@devinprater But you need a ShutAI (sorry, I mean OpenAI) API key with active credits on it.

seedy,

@devinprater You do, but not everyone does/can.

The Windows version restriction on NWSClock has been lifted, as I figured out why the clock thread wasn't being created under Windows 9x, and the program properly starts on Windows NT 4.

    seedy,

@datajake1999 Are there even any good screen readers for NT 4? MDR is a pile of crap stew.

Why does it seem like almost every app that provides a second phone number for calling and texting is either expensive or inaccessible? I've tried Burner, Hushed, MySudo, Talkatone, and TextNow, all of which have problems. I've written to the first three support teams and basically gotten empty promises and complaints that their development teams are small and labelling bottom tabs is hard. Just now I tried signing into Talktaone, and they sent me a verification code contained in an image. Half their settings are unlabelled. This doesn't seem like a coincidence anymore.

    seedy,

@simon There's Text Me, but their accessibility seems to be going down the tube too.

NWSClock is going on a feature freeze, and I will only be fixing bugs if any arise. I already fixed a couple, and the rundown is below.
I just fixed a bug where the Select INI file dialog didn't ask the user if they wanted to overwrite an existing file. I also fixed the Select User Dictionary and Select Audio File Dialogs to properly initialize the file name field with any file that has been previously selected.

    seedy,

@datajake1999 A feature freeze! Not a permanent one I hope.

I bought the Goyo replacement (Supertone Clear). Two things I hate already:

    1. It only works on two devices at a time. I don't know what the implications of this are if you lose one of the devices and can't unregister the plugin, or you want to run it in two diferent DAWs.
    2. In order to download it, I had to download the trial. To download the trial, you need to enter your e-mail address, accept the data usage policy, and accept marketting emails. So I had to sign up to their newsletter in order to download the thing I bought. I'm already signed up, but that's not the point.
      Just ... sigh.
By the way, the super secret promo code given to beta users so they can buy the plugin for $29 is BETA29. But shhh, it's a secret.
    seedy,

@simon The fact that they were kill switching Goyo was a big fat red flag for me right away. I'll stay a thousand feet away from it, thanks. I don't have the money for it, but still.

I think there is a new kid on the block when cross-platform accessible GUI toolkits are concerned. There is a project called Toga, which seems to be a Python toolkit that uses native controls and works on Windows, Linux (GTK), Mac OS, iOS, Android and via Web Assembly. I only tried the Mac OS version so far, and I could not find a single accessibility issue. The API seems pretty nice and Pythonic, not like the abomination that is WX. They use some CSS-like layout engine, laying everything out via boxes, which seems very doable from a blindness perspective. So far, consider me impressed.

    seedy,

@miki This whole idea of boxes, padding, sizing etc breaks my brain. GUI development just isn't for me I guess.
