@augustus Redpill me about king Edward. Why did he resign?

bgm of the picture: Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit

@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@deadheat @augustus I guess you are right.

"After the war, his conduct began to give cause for concern; he engaged in a series of sexual affairs that worried both his father and the British prime minister, Stanley Baldwin."

"The new king showed impatience with court protocol, and caused consternation among politicians by his apparent disregard for established constitutional conventions. Only months into his reign, a constitutional crisis was caused by his proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second."

"Later that year, the couple toured Nazi Germany, which fed rumours that he was a Nazi sympathiser. During the Second World War, Edward was at first stationed with the British Military Mission to France but after the fall of France was appointed Governor of the Bahamas. After the war, Edward spent the rest of his life in France."

Also, I wonder what he saw during the first world war. Or what he saw on his overseas tours.

@deadheat @augustus "As was common practice with upper-class children of the time, Edward and his younger siblings were brought up by nannies rather than directly by their parents. One of Edward's early nannies often abused him by pinching him before he was due to be presented to his parents. His subsequent crying and wailing would lead the Duke and Duchess to send him and the nanny away. The nanny was discharged after her mistreatment of the children was discovered, and she was replaced by Charlotte Bill."

What a lovely nanny to be brought up with in the early years.

@augustus @deadheat
"Edward's youngest brother, Prince John, died at the age of 13 on 18 January 1919 after a severe epileptic seizure. Edward, who was 11 years older than John and had hardly known him, saw his death as "little more than a regrettable nuisance". He wrote to his mistress of the time that "[he had] told [her] all about that little brother, and how he was an epileptic. [John]'s been practically shut up for the last two years anyhow, so no one has ever seen him except the family, and then only once or twice a year. This poor boy had become more of an animal than anything else.""

What a thing to say. This man also seems to have not had a good upbringing so I guess it isn't so surprising.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@augustus @deadheat "Though widely travelled, Edward shared a widely held racial prejudice against foreigners and many of the Empire's subjects, believing that whites were inherently superior. In 1920, on his visit to Australia, he wrote of Indigenous Australians: "they are the most revolting form of living creatures I've ever seen!! They are the lowest known form of human beings & are the nearest thing to monkeys.""

Quite the character.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@augustus @deadheat I bet you are able to relate with him now!

"In 1934, Adolf Hitler, in his ambition to link the British and German royal houses, asked Princess Victoria Louise to arrange a marriage between the 40-year-old Edward and her 17-year-old daughter, Frederica of Hanover, who was at boarding school in England. Her parents refused, due to the age gap, and Frederica instead married Paul of Greece."

Interesting fact.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@ageha @deadheat @Moon @augustus To be fair too, we don't know whether he visited a tribe there and their cultural practices or features that make them stand out were seen as abhorrent to him. There are still tribes in Africa where they do things we would call extreme or find appalling. Different sensitivities. For example, lip plates or stretching earlobes. Then things like FGM or manhood initiations. There is also a condition that changes the feet, so people call one tribe the ostrich people. They aren't allowed to marry outside the tribe so the condition passes on.

sim,

@grillchen @Arcana @mischievoustomato Yes. They would still use horses at the demonstration if there are many people. Just maybe not with you if they are aware. It is mostly officers on foot in gear that deal with crowds anyway. I don't think they are allowed to be as violent as other places. I haven't heard them using water to disperse people for example. I think that is why they have the horses. They have been very lenient with protests here and try to keep the peace by keeping protestors from different groups a part. But if we get the type of violence that the US has then that may change. Also, if they think you are right-wing, then they will crack down on that. It's the only acceptable group to crack down on. They treat environmentalists with kid gloves in comparison.

I feel sick to my stomach. No amount of spin can make this look good so I expect most media outlets will say nothing about this.

@lanodan @Arcana @adamgreenfield What he is doing is the equivalent of getting his laptop out and continuing with work using public transport. Except he no longer needs to worry about having a table or his lap.

I understand the concern that he isn't going to be aware of his surroundings or be able to be present with the other people there. But we are already atomised, I don't think this is much different to phones or laptops in public. There are better ways to tackle being present in public, but that requires creating an inviting environment that you want to be present in that isn't overwhelming the senses and creating communities where people grow up with and know each other. It requires creating high trust in society, fewer people around so there are less strangers. I don't think cities are conducive to this... although you can probably create a mini-community where neighbours know each other and looked out for each other if people didn't keep moving around and weren't so quick to cut people out over differences in opinions.

What is the point in fighting for a country so weak that it can't deport rapists because of human rights?

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@lebronjames75 I dread to think how you get even gayer than this.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@grillchen @Moon Refugees are not a net positive for society. It usually implies that there is a war somewhere, displacing people because of a war is not a positive thing. Wars set everyone back... except for the people exploiting them and getting rich off it I suppose. Wars generally impoverish the countries and people involved. It also leaves people traumatised, and those are not the types of people that are going to be able to be positive for society because they need time to heal from their trauma and most countries are not equipped to handle this, especially at a large scale.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@Moon @grillchen There is another question, why should they get more rights than they have shown others? If you violate someone by murdering them or raping them, have you not forfeited your rights? We're soft on issues like this here now because of human rights. It is easy to exploit it. Yes, after their sentence has been served, I would send someone from Afghanistan back there. I would expect them to do the same thing with our undesirables. Assuming they don't kill them.

sim, to random
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

"According to statistics, around a quarter of rapes in Germany are committed by foreigners, as are a third of murders. However, residents without a German passport make up around 10 percent of the total population. The way the German justice system deals with these cases is mind-boggling: A white German woman was raped by a refugee from Afghanistan in Regensburg, Bavaria. He received a relatively light sentence, but "could not be deported" because "the Taliban could pose a threat to his life". Where do you think he went on holiday after he got out of prison? Yes, he went to Afghanistan (with German taxpayers´ money)."

Wtf if true.

@Moon @kaia Now we have this strange belief by people from middle east or asia that any girl or woman showing skin can be solicited for sex here. How the tables have turned.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@kaia @Moon Advertisement more to the 'boat people', come to England... look at all the women showing off skin. It's also common when men groom young girls here to ply them with things they can't normally get like alcohol or drugs and then rape them. Or sometimes pay them to come back for more. Man here raped a young teenage girl going to see her girl friends and then gave her pocket money for it.

@grillchen "since u like dunking on disney. "
I can't even deny this at this point. I've written too much that basically says that I'm having fun with watching them crash and waste their budgets.

Also, I wasn't aware of that. That's a shame... I thought the Lion King was one of their better stories. But then they do have a habit of 'borrowing' their ideas from all around the world.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@grillchen @clayvaulin I get inspiration from all sorts of places in my stories too. Borrowing ideas. How you blend those ideas together is the important part I think. It's similar to the idea that I don't think there are original ideas as such now, just mixing various sources of inspiration so that it feels original or fresh.
