I've learned I'm about to be out of job by translating the goodbye note they'll have up at some point in the near future.

soukyan,
@soukyan@eldritch.cafe avatar

@simon_brooke no, most companies treat freelancers like single-use mops, so I'm one of those. Just searching for another job right now. Seems like that's all I've been doing for the past year.

can my fellow guys please recommend a that doesn't trigger claustrophobia? (the hard-front types that are meant to be pulled on over the head do, and I love mine, but I'm avoiding to go outside because I dread wearing it)

Are any of you into tarot readings? I'd like to start doing that again since I got my Dracula deck.

soukyan,
@soukyan@eldritch.cafe avatar

@simon_brooke damn, if only they made that deck. How often do game companies miss out on best opportunities?...

I've been rereading an (unpublished) story I wrote almost twenty years ago, about an unhappily married second generation immigrant woman of Muslim Indian descent, who has an intense affair with a white British former army intelligence/special forces officer who'd fought in Iraq.

Like so many of my stories, I think it's good, but I have no idea what to do with it.

soukyan,
@soukyan@eldritch.cafe avatar

@simon_brooke any way to self-publish it on amazon maybe? I really like all of your books I've got to read so far. One was very transformative too, they're worth seeing the light of day

Wish my scanner wasn't almost two decades old and you could see how cute Dorian looks IRL. I miss this charming necromancer.

Sorry, I'm going to whine. It's January. It's not the best time of year to live in a straw hut in the woods. It gets dark at four in the afternoon and isn't properly light until ten in the morning. It's cold. I don't have electricity, so I can't use my big computer, and my laptop battery isn't holding charge.

I've been engaging in discussions about Lisp, which brings back the times in my life when I was happiest and most productive, and just emphasises how comprehensively life has fallen apart.

@simon_brooke you're very loved, Simon, and highly admired. I truly wish life turned for the better for you. Hang in there, my dearest friend

A WIP, with some hints. It'll be a little while until I can present it, but... tomorrow starts my birthday-month, no better time to express some support~ (yes, it's related, how could it not be after all the Like A Villain blogs I did) https://ko-fi.com/post/WIP-Candle-notes-ferns-and-moss-poppy-leathe-U6U6ROW39

boardgamebreakdown, (edited ) to books
@boardgamebreakdown@mas.to avatar

Just finished "A Desolation Called Peace." Great book but after reading this and it's predecessor back-to-back, I'm worn out.

Any recommendations on lighter and quicker reads?

Edit: thanks for all the recs so far. For reference, I have read all Murderbot as well as the two wild built novellas by Chambers. I loved both of them.

soukyan,
@soukyan@eldritch.cafe avatar

@boardgamebreakdown Murderbot for intricate, but fun reads, shorter too. If prefer the similar kind of space-opera on high scale, then books by Aliette de Bodard might be worth looking into

soukyan,
@soukyan@eldritch.cafe avatar

@boardgamebreakdown Starter Villain by John Scalzi is a very nice light read in similar humor to murderbot. A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers - a very unique, light read (sorta solar-punk); pests by Bethany Brookshire if non-fic completely, very simple, very interesting (and very surprising at times!)

soukyan,
@soukyan@eldritch.cafe avatar

@boardgamebreakdown In that case Aliette de Bodard is definitely worth checking out, her works are similar in that elevated but calming tone, with strange and unusual sights and events (comparable to ghibli movies, but there's reimaginings of some disney stories (example being Vanisher's Palace - sorta beauty-and-the-beast-esc), and even classics like sherlock too (something called tea-master, I think...) )

    @aetataureate if you'll like these books, I recommend Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky. It was due to this trilogy that Wool came up short for me (I can still recognize they were very good books tho, and Hugh Howey has written many a fine thing)
