Professional dev by day, hobby gamedev by night. Also run Stellar Forces, a Laser Squad/XCom remake. Probably developing an unfinished remake of something at this moment in time.

If you would like to try a short 3D adventure game, may a humbly suggest my new project: Clone 24.

The new Overwatch update, after waiting about 45 minutes to download it, then comes with a ~3 minute unskippable intro. Have we learnt nothing???

I think I've reached the point where I'm simply not interested in any mini-series pumped out by Netflix et al. Even ones recommended to me are slow paced, shallow plotted time-sinks that rely too much on SFX and treat the viewer as cattle with endless spare time to 'fill'. I boot up Netflix or Disney or Prime and just scroll past pages of mee-too nonsense, tired old franchises and predictable filler.

Life is too short... fill it with quality stuff that makes you happy. You're not missing out.

@Fizzychicken Epitomised by Boba Fett. If a series is so long that there's not even enough story for the protagnist to need to be in all the episodes, something's wrong.

What do you call the bit in between levels of a game, where it shows you how well you did and other fancy bits?

This is probably the best thing I ever posted on Twitter. The memory is pretty dear to me; I'm sharing it here so it still exists somewhere if that place collapses.

@mcnees On a similar note, my kids seems to think that PS4 controllers never need recharging. And they're older than 11.

I'm slowly remaking Alien 8 in 3D. And my poor laptop can't render all 128 rooms at a decent framerate!

So it looks like my online Laser Squad remake "Stellar Forces", which has been running for 14 years, is going to slowly fade away.

Since I can't update the Android app which is now over 2 years old, Google's policy is to prevent new downloads, so no new players can join. There is a PC client, but Android seems to be the most popular by a lot.

Still, this is an opportunity to create a new turn-based strategy using the knowledge and ideas from the last 14 years. Just need to decide wot...

stephensmith,
@stephensmith@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@popey Technically it can, but I don't have the time to learn about all the idiosyncrasies of Android Studio and Gradle, and get round all the other barriers that Google puts in the way of Android Apps.

Hardware progress in the early days was just bonkers. You just expected giant strides all the time because that's what routinely happened. Just brain-smashing chunks of increase in capability inevitably, endlessly, for years. One year you're on a ZX80. A blip of time and it's a C64. A couple of Christmases and it's an Amiga and the distance back to that ZX80 seems like a gulf even though you're not even that much older.

@llamasoft_ox it blows my mind that from 1985 to 1995 iI went from a 48k ZX Spectrum to a PC with the internet.
