A few weeks with Ubuntu as desktop and I am reminded of why I always end up switching to Kubuntu (KDE).

For some reason GNOME strives to completely dumb down and simplify the desktop and all its apps. Who is this hypothetical user in 2023 they are designing for who is so new to desktop computing that a few settings/buttons in an app will scare them? 🙄

Undoubtedly true.

I was going for a joke, but I think the minimalist ideology of aesthetics over function is from the same source impulse.

They've got a similar case of superiority complex. They look down on their users, nothing can change that at this point.

    Since the start of the (still ongoing) pandemic, almost anything that had a sign-up date for faculty (professional development opportunities, pedagogy training, hosting summer research undergrads, etc) has had to extend its deadline b/c of not getting enough ppl signing up. Yet no one seems to be doing anything about the burnout & overwork of faculty that that is so clearly a sign of.

    Well, they're expanding administration so they can have more committees study the problem and building more office space to have those meetings in. 👍

    Phone Technology Question!

    The hubs and I were having a discussion about Apple continually releasing new iPhones without any actual innovation. That lead us to a few questions, that I, of course, said, Well, I'll ask Mastodon about it! So here goes:

    Have we reached as far with Phone Technology, as it exists as a rectangle piece of hardware in your pocket, as we can?

    Is the future in software?

    What about a better version of Google Glass?

    Are we heading towards implants?

    Please don't mention anything with a see through screen, literally no one wants other people to see what they are doing on their phone! LOL

    I don't think it's wise to allow a corpo, especially apple tbh, to have a filter on your perceptions or to overlay their preferred perspective onto what you see or hear. Apple is extractive, wasteful and arrogant.

    Further, I resent the idea that I can be videoed, audio-recorded, identified (even as just a recognized face or voice) and tracked/identified going about my day because you want to wear a surveillance device on your face, either for the convenience or the status.

    I’m realizing that for shows and movies I like to watch again and again, it may be time to get them on DVD once more or for the first time as the streamers/studios/networks may destroy them at any time for a tax write off.

    To pull a Zaslav: to show up day after day and keep making things worse.

    The business model has shifted to producing half as much for twice the cost. (See housing, video cards, food, whatever.)

    Not meeting the demand nor the need (depending on the industry) is irrelevant. It keeps prices high and labor/equipment/maintenance/etc lower.

    All capitalists seek monopoly and monopsony.

    They'll keep doing that until they're extricated from the economy. These are the worst of us with the largest and most effective propaganda machine in history.

    It does if you think of the demand as creative work instead of retreads. Mere numbers of films in this case isn't indicative of value.

    The scarcity could also be judged in terms of monopsony - who can you produce with (as opposed to for?) Artificial scarcity isn't just about buying, but is also about selling.

    Also, we're discussing how they are distributed after they're filmed. And what sort of return the people who made them receive -- if it's better for the company if the movie has to disappear off a list, it's gone. No DVD? Guess you're out of luck.

    Now they're offering less -- it's not just the original creation of some work, but access to it later.
