1/3) I watched the first episode, and part of the second, of the 1973 SF series "The Starlost."

The early 70s saw a terrible drought of SF on television. As a tween, I invested great hopes in the show. I was familiar with the generation ship concept.

I'm trying to remember old pulp scifi stories containing an old scifi troupe.

The idea was in the story, there existed telepathy and other mental powers. Some people's powers were latent, they had them but could not use them. Often were unaware that they had them.

BUT ... if another telepath tried to read their mind, they could see (internally) how it is done. Suddenly the latent telepath was a full telepath.

Can you remember scifi stories like that?

swordplay,
@swordplay@tooters.org avatar

@nyrath

It's kinda through Heinlein sorta, but not that 'awakening' trope.

Laumer... feels right. I reread Galactic Odyssey a lot, but the developed skill is more subconscious perception than telepathic.

Lafayette O'Leary had a protag that learns cross-dimensional conjuring from a book...

I didn't read his Bolo or Retief that much. I did read the Imperium books, but don't recall that trope.

@nyrath

Julian May's Pliocene Saga has at least two characters whose latent psychic powers are triggered by technological enhancement which they later surpass.

In the Taltos series by Steven Brust, Vlad (the main character) is taught to use his psychic powers by his grandfather via hypnosis.

What if everyone stopped pretending the people who belonged to the "GOP" as it was previously, and perhaps, foolishly understood, still belong to that party, instead of the new Neo-Confederate Party.

Got any suggestions for TV?

No horror, please, nor gritty dystopic tough guy stuff. Over it.

Recently I've enjoyed , , : Strange New Worlds. Caught up on .

ST:SNW in particular really hit the spot. We can actually work together to fix things, ya know. (I know ya know :) )

I'd also consider some light mysteries with some style - big fan of and for instance. Or heist stuff like and

swordplay,
@swordplay@tooters.org avatar

@rayckeith

I saw the first season of Sense8 - don't remember it well but I think I liked it.

Had maybe heard of Travelers - Wikipedia says 'Brad Wright' who was a Stargate guy, if I remember right?

I mentioned The Good Place and Doctor Who, but fantasy is a fourth place genre for me although it's easier to find than good light mystery or heist stuff. What's your fave of the Korean ones?

swordplay,
@swordplay@tooters.org avatar

@virtualbri

Yeah, I should have mentioned Lower Decks! Super fun, and the x-over to SNW was fantastic.

Prodigy I read about, but haven't seen. I'll look into it again!

Miss Fisher I've watched some of, maybe a couple seasons. Totally dig the style and the period - I seem to remember thinking the writing was maybe a little weak? I could be wrong, it was some time ago.

There was another series, more grim, The Doctor Blake Mysteries that captured me for a bit. Not sure if they're Ozzy or Kiwi?

swordplay,
@swordplay@tooters.org avatar

@rayckeith

Will do!

I did watch Fringe, Sliders, some Quantum Leap, some Old Who.

The Roddenberry stuff - the first year of Andromeda was good. Once Ol' Captain Meathead took control of production, it fell off a cliff.

Didn't watch the Something Something Earth one much?

Did you see the old movies he made with John Saxon? Pax something.

What does it feel like to be a centrist 'liberal' mid?

It has to be a kind of shallow self-love, right? They always seem to be so proud of how they manage to compromise with evil.

It's like they see the surface of things as reality and are utterly unable to look beneath for the reasons, motivations and history.

They compare themselves to this evil, see themselves as better, and stop there. 'We only split 3 babies, not 6!'

This moral failure enrages them at the left when it's pointed out.

This politesse all the time, it's the most desiccated contemptible vanity. 'We're better than them, so we attack the truth for its lack of civility.'

Decades ago Atrios called them 'Versailles' and 'The Village'. They're all so fucking weak, held up by privilege and money and out-of-my-view-please violence.

I am so sick of people who think they can trick shot 'a return to normalcy' with a witty bon mot.

Intellectually (and literally) inbred aristocratic mutants.
