I tried org-roam for about 2 months and it was a total failure. My workflow simply does not mesh well with Zettlekesten like workflows. It was an interesting test and ultimately burned myself out trying to squeeze my note taking style into it.

I haven't used Emacs in a week because of this. Needed sometime to reevaluate my workflow. And it's kinda funny but I rediscovered handwritten notes during this time. I was into the "Bullet Journal" system a few years ago. So I started hand writing my notes and it was fun again!

Another thing I found during this time was the Rocketbook Mini notebook. It's a small spiral bound notebook with plastic like pages. You can use a erasable pen to write and rewrite multiple times. The idea is you waste less paper. Rocketbook makes a cool app that does OCR scans of your notes. And it can automatically send to any location you want. So I have it send OCR scans to my work email. It attaches a PDF and a plain txt file. When my handwritten notes are legible enough it actually spits out Org-down syntax! I simply open the txt file in Emacs and save it where I needed it. Super handy when I'm not in front of a computer with Emacs.

Anyways time to get back to my beloved Emacs.

Are there any active podcasts? I’m afraid to ask as I expect the answer is either „no” or one that’s published since the 80s and each episode is 10 hours long.

@mms Can I get a link to that 10hr long Emacs podcast? :neofox_cute_reach:

sr.ht still down for almost three days. Turns out there is actually a distributed peer-to-peer Git:

https://radicle.xyz/

Time to try it.

EDIT: if anyone cares to try it out, I've just published a simple README repo. This is the address:

If you want, try to commit something to it and reply.

@louis I remember this project from a while back. But the site looks totally different. I wonder if it's the same project? Either way the idea of a peer-to-peer Git service sound pretty cool

Edit:
I just looked it up on Internet Archive and yeah it is the same project. The old design looked better IMHO. The idea is still cool though. Basically not only was it p2p git but they would tie-in ability to pay in crypto for code contributions or feature request, etc. I think that's why I gave up on it. I thought it would be a matter of time before it would be another failed "web3" project. Maybe I was wrong? :neofox_think:

I"ve having a bit of a hard time understanding the use of in (Server). So podman containers can be downloaded as "System" images and "User" images.

What is the difference?

So far I fixed an issue with a container that was not working with the "user" image and downloaded the "System" image and ran the container with the --privileged flag. I bit confused as to what is going on here?

tacosandlinux,
@tacosandlinux@emacs.ch avatar

@holgerschurig ok I see now that I can if needed run a podman container as root. In this case the container needed access to the DVD drive. Running --privileged was the only thing that allowed the DVD drive to be seen by container.

And here's a screenshot of what I see in my cockpit interface. I can chose between system and my user to download a container. I'm guessing you are right about the Red Hat lingo. I use Podman desktop on my fedora laptop and haven't come across this in that interface.

I've been seeing users talking about the recent issues with EasyPG and GnuPG. I just wanted to give attention to an alternative that I've been happy with. @anticomputer wrote age.el which works with the Age encryption tool.

It's worked great for my needs. It may be useful as another tool for some of you.

I just want to give a shoutout to all the FOSS devs out there. Especially package maintaners who package FOSS for non-libre systems :neofox_floof_angel:

Truly amazing work these devs do.

They make it easier for folks like me who are tied down to non-libre systems at work to at least use FOSS on a daily basis.

I encourage those who can to send a monetary donation to your favorite projects. Even it's a one time donation, it will be more than enough.

Again thanks to all the FOSS devs :neofox_heart:

Why did I wake up with the urge to install this morning?

hendrik, to emacs

Has anybody using on with managed to associate files in Windows with opening an emacsclient in linux?

tacosandlinux,
@tacosandlinux@emacs.ch avatar

@hendrik like your .emacs config is on Windows (NTFS) and when you launch emacsclient (WSL) it uses that config?

tacosandlinux,
@tacosandlinux@emacs.ch avatar

@hendrik @glitzersachen so basically you can associate files to open with whatever app you want but the trick (or at least how I do it) is to first create a shortcut to the app. So any app you install under WSL it creates a desktop shortcut in Windows. This is why you can launch Emacs(WSL) under the start menu.

You can create a specific shortcut for emacsclient by just appending the commandline flags.

For example a Windows shortcut:

Target: C:\Users\user.name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\pathToWSL\wslg.exe -d Distrod --cd "~" -- emacs -Q

Here I am calling the exe for my local Linux distro "Distrod" and passing a command line argument to open Emacs -Q. The path to your WSL exe depends on your setup.

Once I have this shourtcut I can associate files to open with it. That is the tricky part but there are a few blogs that I'll link once I sit down with my morning coffee.

tacosandlinux,
@tacosandlinux@emacs.ch avatar

@glitzersachen @hendrik

Here's the article it's a bit old but it shows how to setup Windows to open files with Emacs in WSL. It uses Python and registry editing, which feels to hacky to me.

I didn't go down this route because I can't make these types of changes on my work computer. But I am more than happy using the shortcut option.

I know this may be a dumb question, but: are there any guides about using ? Not about how to use, they key bindings but rather how to it effectively - like how big files are best and so on. I know this should come from experience, but since I'm only 6 months in , having some inherited knowledge would be very useful!
